Booqaloo back at San Berdoo By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDINO , CA , MAY 2 Home on vacation , Bobby Schwartz raced at the Inland Motorcycle Speedway track , much to the delight of the capa- 28 cit y crowd. Bob earned his wa y into the Handicap Main event . where he started on the 50 'yard line. A threeman pileup left Da ve DeTernple out of the restart , and when things got back underway. it was Dave Sims from the 40 ' yard line working his way past the rest of the field with Schwartz right on his tail. Sims took the checkered flag first in an outstanding race. Da ve DeTemple was not hurt and . up until the point of th e crash . was th e sta r of the night. Last week , he rode in second division . but this week he was back in first where he ran awa y with both his heat race and semi -final and was the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing. Big Jim "The Animal " Fishback took third in the Handicap Main event and lap after lap he looked like he was going to sweep past S im s and Schwartz. It was Fishback's birthda y. but Sims was not going to gi ve him the Main as a gift. Big Jim had another shot at the cash in the Scratch Main event and this time he did get past Sims a nd Alan Christian. but th ere was no way he was going to get Mike Bastl Mike won the Main, giving him, so far this season , three out of five Scratch Main events. • Mark Detter picked up his third win in .division two Handicap Main events and will start ha ving yardage added to his starting spot as he works his way toward first division . Third di vision is where you get your start in the sport. With a little skill and a lot of luck , you will end up in ih e . winners' circle and that's the doorwa y to d ivision two . The door was opened by Kris Remsgar with a win in th e division . Long track t~aining pays at Ascot By Dennis Greene GARDENA, CA , MAY 3 Ascot is the largest of the SoCal speedway tracks and it's about the only place where American riders can ge t any idea what it wou ld be like to ride on th e longer Eu ropean tracks . Bobby Schwartz , the pride of th e Cradley Heath Speedway Motorcycle Team in Gr eat Britain . has spent a lot of time at Ascot. It helped a little when he went overseas. but what he has learned over there carried him to victory in the Scratch Main event this past Thursday nigh t. Bob is home for IAbove) Dave DeTemple. Dan McNeil and Phil Gag no n tangle at San Berdoo. IBelow l M ike Bast won the Scratch Main at San Bernardino. just ' one week on vacation. then he goes back to Great Britain where he will be riding on about 20 different tracks th is year. There was a hard crash in that Scra tch Main event on the first lap that saw Bobby McLain and Shawn Moran go down when McLain got into the rear wheel of Schwartz. Moran and McLain got hooked up and went off the track and into the crash wall. After a few minutes, Shawn was helped to his feet . but McLain was taken to the hospital to have his back looked at. Shawn was not allowed to make the restart of the race , so it was just a two -man event with Bobby Schwartz and Mike Bast , and just like the two -lap feature match race. Schwartz put it to Bast. Ascot again gave new riders a chance to see what the big track is all about. There were a half-dozen riders who showed up who weren't even on the program , just hoping that if there was an opening they wou ld get a ride. They did get to ride in a special added event , and it was a good lea rn ing process. T hose riders who have been riding for a yea r or more ge t a chance in second d ivision . Keith Larsen recove red from a runaway wheelstand at the start of th e Main event that made him last into the first turn . and la y by Ia p picked off each one for the win . Da ve DeTemp le mad e it two straight Main event s in a row , taking rhe Handicap Main event with 16year-old Lance King pushing him all th e way . Not to take anything away. from Dave , but young La nce is just outstanding! Lance is a past J un ior National Speedway titl e holder a nd has spent ha lf of his short life racing speedway . In just three weeks , he has earned his way into first division , and he really is not riding over his head . He even held off last year's Speedwa y Rookie , Shawn Moran . Shawn also came into speedway by way of the Junior Speedway program. Faas, Sims cash in at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COST A MESA . CA , MAY 4 Du ring the past several sea sons of speedway, most speedway fans have overlooked the Junior Speed wa y p rogram. It was rega rded as hal ftime entertainment. Bu t now that the kids have tu rned 16-years of age and are ridi ng the big bikes, we ca n all see just how important those years of training were. Wes Randolph is t he newest of the J un ior riders to follow in t he tire tracks of Lance King and th e Moran Brot hers. Wes won the division three Main event with as much style as a ny rider with a lifet ime of racing behind him. A look at the division two half of the Friday night show saw Bob bi Hunter,
