Staten, Tripes smokeCMC CarlsbadMX By Mark Kariya CARLSBAD, CA , APR . 22 "Rocket Rex" St aten lived up to his name with double wins here today on his Yamahas. Mike Tripes, though, took home more 38 of th e Continental Mo te-sports Club's money with a win , place and show in t hree cla sses aboard his Escondido Suzuki-spo nsored stockers . Staten took both 500cc Pro motos with seeming ease. Tripes follow ed him the distance , as did David Geri g ( Esc / O P) . Husky -mounted Alan Smith work ed his way up from seventh to finish a strong fourth . In the second moto , Staten had command of the entire race also, at times allowing himself a little levity by throwing his hands off the ba rs in mid air to amuse the crowd . Smith got a better start and rode in second the whole moto. Tripes got a round Bill Jewell (Mai) on lap two and chalked up a third, good for second ove rall while Ch ip Howell (Hus) recorded 7-4 for fourth . The 250 Pros provided one of the more exciting races of th e day . Tony Wnaket (Yam) got the holes hot with Staten and Tripes in tow. Tripes slip ped by the Rocket on th e first la p . In the first section befor e th e uphill (t he track was run ba ckwa rd s today), T ri pes fou nd th e fast way arou nd Wanket to take the lead. Already the lead trio was putting some ground on Tim Lunde (Yam), Ron Palmer (Hon) and Chris Chaffee (Yam ). Lap three saw Staten take off on the first jump and fly by Wanket. Farther back , Pa lmer and Chaffee made con ta ct with Ch affee going down and out. Staten began to slowly reel in Tripes after the halfway point , looking to set up a tight d ash to th e finish . With a few laps to go , however , Tripes was slowed by a flat tire , letting Stat en ge t by without being able to give , very a good ac count of himself. In the seco nd rn o to , W anket pu t his mon o out fro nt again, followed by Sta ten , T ripes , Ch affee and Ju an Benavid ez (Yam) . Stat en ju mped p ast W anket in the same spot as th e fir st mot o , th ou gh , and sewed up h is fourth win of th e day . Tripes was ready for a win after p laying seco nd or th ird fiddl e all da y, and got it in the l 25cc Pros . Mike Toycen (Yam) was first out of th e ga te in the first moto , but Scott Burnworth (Su z) went by him after th e seco nd bend. Tripes and Gerig foll ow ed Burnworth and in th e right -hander under the bridge , Tripes scooted by Burnworth and was set for th e rest of the mor o. Bu rn wort h rode in second th e who le way whi le Rick J ohnson (Yam) pull ed Gerig in and b oun ced by o n th e downhill on lap nin e . R ick Maki (Ya m) fin ished fift h while ea rly leader Toycen went out with a blown shoc k. Thou gh T oycen got the ho leshot in th e seco nd moto , it was T ripes who too k over a nd went on for a well - ea rn ed win , Burnworth behind him. (T he l25cc Pro purse was boosted an additional $100 by Escondido Subaru dealer Joe Erler whose son " H a n k Williams" nabbed second Mini Junior on his Suzuki .) Toycen slid out at the bottom of th e downhill on lap fou r , breaking his front brake le ver and finish ing a frustrated eighth. Gerig and Johnson argued over thi rd for a wh ile until Johnson slid out near " R a tt lesn ake Gulch ," putting it out of reach. Don Fuller (Suz) rode in fifth . Results \ MINI JR : 1. Breker, Tarantino, Holleytake CRC Dr. Pepper/Yamaha round two . By Brian George O RANGE , CA , A PR . 22 Alm ost 400 riders came out to Sad dleback Pa rk for the second ro und of the Ca lifornia Racing Clu b 's $ 10 ,0 00 Dr . Pep pe r! Yamaha four-race seri es, which had a $2 ,000 Pro purse along with a motorcycle and other contingencies for Sportsm en . Yam aha support rider Jimmy Holley put together a pair of moro wins to ca ptu re the I 25cc Pro class, whil e J im T aran tin o took his Cole Bros. Suzuki to a 250 cc Pro victory , and Norsrar's Goat Breker fought off Dave Williams and Suzuki's Jeff J ennings to take th e 500cc Pro overall. Holley's I25cc victory had very little problems, as he led every lap of each moto . The first round saw Bob b y Kline, Paul Thede, Johnny O 'Mara and A .J . Whiting follow Holley around the first lap , but none of the trailers could match his pace. The on ly other rider looking capable enough to catch the Yamaha were DG teammates Tim Locey and Willy Simons . Locey pulled up to third on the second lap behind Thede , and on the next circuit Simons was in a tigh t fourth . Thede held on for one more lap, but then in two laps dropped to fo urth ahead of O 'M a r a . T he de succumbed to the Al Bak er 's FMF rider on the eighth la p and settled in ahead of Ed Arnet, until the last la p flag came out. Then O'Mara got off halfway through the lap and dropped to sixth, and the checkers came out signaling Holley the winner. Moto two wa s another Holley runawa y from start to finish . but Locey and Simons had a fantast ic battle goin g on for second overa ll. At the sta rt Holley led Gr egg Toyama , O 'Mara , Bobby Kline , Lo cey and Simons, bu t in two laps O 'Mara had mo ved up to thi rd behind Toyama and H oll ey, with Simons ahead of Kline and ' Locey. The n ext time around Sim ons picked off O 'Mara and Locey did th e same to Kline , bu t Loce y began ha ving d ifficulties getting by O 'Mara. In the stru ggle for fourth , Locey was held up long enough to allow Simons to pass Toyama for second and pull away. Locey finally .got O 'Mara when a broken chain sent Johnny back to the pits. Now Locey had to get by Toyama , another tough pass , and it took him two more laps before he cou ld take over a distant third , and with two laps remaining in the r a ce , it looked as though he wouldn't hav e a chance. The checkers soon fl ew with the order Ho lle y , Simons , Loc ey , Toyama and John Whelchel, who was seventh the first round . Ov er all th e win went 10 Holley, followed by Simons, Locey, Whelchel , a nd Ed Arnet. Thirty-six rid ers cra mmed the ga te for the start of th e firs t 250cc Pr o
