Doug Hall is continuing to
change the hilly Riverside County
MX course so that every week
riders get to race on something a little
di fferent. Last Sunday a fair crowd of
riders turned out to compete on th e
modified track and among them were
a number of talented 250cc Pros.
At the start of that class , it was Kurt
Sofka on a Wheelsmith Can -Am side
by side with Doug Heil (Su z) and Mark
Barnes (Yam ) in front of the pack.
Way back in 12th place was Redlands
Su zuk i's Marty Miller (Su z) a nd
teammate Danny Burtt (Su z) was right
behind him . but bo th riders
im med ia tely started working toward
the fro n t. Sofka held on to his lead
through the ea rly laps in spite of
pressure from Heil and as th e ra ce
cont inued he developed a very sm a ll
lead. Heil got slightly out of shape on
lap six and was passed by Barnes. but
he recovered in time to avoid any more
loss. Then th e top positions were set .
with Cycl e World 's Don Griewe in
fou rt h , but fifth place was still up for
grabs . The rider who took it was Miller
who finished securely in spite of a last
lap fall. Burtt could only manage an
eighth.
In the next moto, Miller jumped
into the lead with Heil in pursuit.
Sofka didn't even complete the first
lap due to ignition troubles which put
him out of the race . Third place
belonged to Barnes in the first part of
the race , but he moved up to second
when Heil fell on the fourth lap. Burtt
was once again the victi m of a poor
start. but this time he was moving up
faster and he was right behind Griewe
and
Darryl
Lumbattis ,
who
respectively oc cupied third and
fourth , by the sixth lap. The order was
now set once again and the onl y
change in the final laps was Lumbattis
dropping back to sixth due to a flat
tire. Overall , Barnes took the win
ahead of Miller, Griewe and Burtt .
