Johnson moved ahead of Gerig and wa s running out of time to catch Dale . Dale took th e overall win , Johnson was seco n d a n d T ripes sc ored third overall. Some interesting names popped up in the lead in moto one of the 250cc Pros. Juan Benavidez (Ya m), Stev e Blackman (Mai) and a name everyone who follows CMC know s, Tim Lunde (Yam) were right up front to lead th e pack. Benavidez had just tu rned Pro two weeks p rio r and Blackman had never won a Pro race at Saddleback . Well , Lunde made quick work of th e rookies and began running awa y with the r ace. With Blackman and Benavid ez dueling for seco nd, T ed Hoyt (Ya m) , T on y Gomez (Ma i) and Jerry Raymer (Ya m) were at eac h other's throats for fou rth . As the sto ry oft en goes, Lunde ga the red in another win. Blackman was seco nd, Ben avidez third an d the n Hoyt , Gomez and Raymer . T his time Gomez got a bett er sta rt in moto two of the 250cc Pros a nd had a real chance to race with Lunde . Blackm an was fighting traffic back in fifth and Benavidez was nowhere to be found . Run ning in the third positi on was th e Honda -mounted Ron Palmer . Pa lmer held onto third without a ny pressure u nt il two laps rema ining when Black ma n tried to ma ke him move . Blackm a n had to sett le for fou rt h wh ich ga ve him seco nd in the fin al standings with a 2-4 ta lly. New Intermediate Gary Graham (Suz) had a win in the first mota , but a spi ll in the second moto eli mina ted him . No matter, how short the Pros or even sometim es t he Intermediates are at Speedway I 17 the Junior s a re a lways big, exc iting and un pr ed icta ble. Best class of th e n igh t was the 250ccs as new ri der Jeff Dowe ll (Hon) got tired of ru n ning second every week a nd went two for two, beati ng Ron Laffr anch i who had two scra mb ling fo u rt hs; enough for a tie -brea ker over Ron Da vis. Even with purse ra ces going on elsewhere it d idn't bother th e good turnout of rac ers that showed up to race wit h Ameri can Motocross Enterprises a t Ind ia n Dunes' Shadow Glen track. O ne of the most exciting races of the day was the I25 ~c Pro race. Suzuki rid er Steve Schmitz a lso had to work his way up to t ak e ove r seco nd , d ro p p ing Lync h int o third . Gran Maben (Ho n) also passed Lyn ch to tak e over third . It was a differ ent story as the gafe drop ped for the seco n d mot o, T here was no sto pping Suzu ki-m ounted Chip J ohnson as he took the hol esh ot a nd th e lead rig ht up to th e checkered fla g with Maben taking second and th ird go ing to Schmi tz. The overa ll win went to Maben with Schmit z taking second a nd th ird goi ng to Lyn ch . In the 250cc Pro rac e , moto one saw Yamaha ride r Mik e Sh oemak er taking the lead followed by Bobby Jones (Hon) with rider T racy Oswell (Suz ) in thi rd . Jones went d own , which enabl ed Oswell to take second a nd gave third pl ace to Ern ie Hendricks (Ma i). Mot o tw o sa w Jones ta king th e hol eshot and th e lead with Sh oemak er and Oswell seco nd and third . The ove ra ll win went to Shoemaker with Oswell ta king second a nd thir d go ing to J ones . In th e O pen Pro cla ss , Yamaha rider Steve Rawson pulled the holesh ot a nd th e lead with Mai co rider Da ve Haugh in seco n d . H augh put the pressure on Rawson bu t Rawson was a ble to hold on to tak e th e first moto win wit h H augh settl ing for seco nd an d Mai co-mounted Bill Hagen taki ng th ird. Rou nd two saw Haugh taking th e lea d with Hagen in second and putting the p ressu re on Haugh with Ma ico rid er St e ve R ich a rd in t h ir d and pushing H agen . Ri chard passed Hagen and was push in g Haugh for the lead whe n he drop pe d back due to bik e prob lems . Hagen p ressured Haugh for the lead but Haugh was able to hold'on to tak e th e win and th e overa ll for th e d ay. Secon d went to Rawson wit h th ird going to H agen . Mai co rider Ro b ert Br a zie r is ma king it look easy in the O pen Junior class as he too k back to back wins wit h Can -A m r id e r R au l Vi lla taki ng second and th ird going to Jesse James.
