Husky's Max Eddy had gonen a terrible sta rt and was pu shing hard through the pack and th e d ust to make up time, Just past th e first check , he got off hard, breaking a wrist. One sect ion of th is trail was lat er re -ro u ted when it proved to be more dangerous than anticipated . Six m iles from the pits Ogilvie continued to lead but Mille r was giving him no slack, Eckardt came to an abrupt ha lt - after ho lding the thi rd spot most of th e firs t loo p , he ran out of gas. A spectator nearby rod e his bike over to the frantic Eckardt and drained some gas into Eckardt 's tank. but by the time the gas transfer was complete. too many riders had passed for Mike to continue to be a th reat. Senior leader Bob Doig ha d stret ched ou t a h ealthy lea d over "Do c" Morris Norm an . The loop seemed to be conducive to flat tires, Ogilvie suffered a rear flat befo re he rea ched t he pits wh ich allowed Miller to move pa st him int o the lead , Miller pulled in for gas in record tim e. He was al most to t he d istant bomb for a seco nd go 'rou nd before th e next rid er . Scheffers , left the pits . Ogilv ie had reached the pits still ru nning second overa ll, bu t lost the position as h is p it cr ew scurried to change th e flat. Next through and heading out on to the second loop were H eav yweight Terry Da vis. Checker Paul Ch rist ensen , Conner and Ed Zarp. Collins was next over the hill . followed by Charlie Hamill. who had gotten serious and moved from 20th at the bomb to ninth overall. First Amateur, Terry Leighton . was in 10th spot . followed by Fitzpatrick and Senior Doig . Second Amateur' was Dou g Be h nk e . Cliff Thomas ha d moved into the Trailb ike lea d . Amateur C rider Tim Foster led his class into the pits with a fla t tire , Nov ice John Cline held a slim lead over Anderson and the rest of the green -platers. Solberg held the Begi nner lead. Although Ogil vie made a valiant try for the lead by moving back up through the r a n ks after his tire change. he was unable to catch Miller , who powered his way to another overall win . finish ing the race in' two hours and se ven minutes. Ogi lvie had to be sa tisfied with second overall. first Heavyweighi Expert. He was followed b y Heavyweights Scheffers and Zarp. who had once again charged through the pack to finish fourth , Christensen neve r let off and finished fifth . Hamill p roved he 's st ill got the touch by fini sh ing eighth overa ll, first in ttre 175cc class , Morris Norman took the Senior lead awa y from Doig only fiv e miles from the fin ish . Leighton retained the overa ll Amateur win.
