APR. 8 You could not ask for a much better race day than the one at Indian Dunes - the sun was out and lots of riders showed up to race for their share of the $3 .000 purse offered by American Motocross Enterprises. Bosch Spark Plugs and Suzuki West helped sponsor this two-day event. along with AME. In the Open Pro class. Team Yamaha rider Rick Burgett showed just how goodhe is with back to back wins. As the gate dropped for the first round. Yamaha- mounted Darin Oliver was able to pull the holeshot and the lead with Burgett and CanAm rider Greg Robertson following . Oliver held the lead until the fourth lap when Burgett took command . Robertson took over second with Yamaha rider Terry Clark sliding into third and fourth being filled by Tony Wanket (Yam), dropping Oliver back to fifth. As the gate dropped for the second round, Yamaha- mounted Joe Root grabbed the holeshot followed closely by Steve Rawson (Yam) and Greg Robertson. Root slid out in a sandy tum. taking Rawson and Robertson out with him. which left the lead open for Burgett. Maico riders Dave Haugh and Parry Klassen took over second and third . Klassen put th e pass on Haugh to take over second. while a hard-riding Robertson was moving his way up through the pack to reclaim third place. The overall for the day went to Burgett with Robertson taking second and third going to Clark. In the 125cc Pro race Suzuki mounted "Flying Mike" Brown took the lead with Yamaha rider Tim Locey in close pursuit. Willie Simons showed just what kind of a rider he is as he worked his way up through the pack to take the third place spot. As the gate dropped for the second moto, it was Locey with the holes hot and the lead with John O'Mara (Suz) in second and Bob Kline (Hon) in third. With Brown out of the race due to a broken ankle he received in the 250cc Pro race. the overall win went to Locey with O 'Mara taking second and third going to Simons. It was all Can-Am rider Donnie Hansen in the 250cc Pro class as he rode to back to back wins . Yamahamounted Tim Locey put up a strong fight but there was no stopping the strong-riding Hansen. The overall for the day went to Hansen with Locey taking second and third going to Suzuki-mounted Tracy Oswell. With the sportsmen also getting their share of the money today it was really a good day for fast young rider Bob Schulz as he piloted his Yamaha to the overall wins in the 250cc and the Open Intermediate classes to take bucks. Robert Brazier made it look easy as he piloted his Maico to back to back wins in the Open Junior class . Brazier took a bad fall in a qualifier on Saturday but was able to make it back to take the win . Matt Whiting pulled the overall win in the 125cc Intermediate class with Eddie Perry taking second and third going to Pat McConnell.
