This season , races will be run under AMA sanction so that our riders and visito rs from other countries will not have so much hassle from the world control board , th e FIM . The rules are the same as pa st seasons , but there will be a much harder look taken at rough riding and illegal equipment. Early in the night . before half the fans had settled into their seats. strict ru le enforcement ca me into play. J oh n Sandona , starting from the 20 -yard line. overtook Don Faulkner in tu rn one. They got together and went into the crash wa ll. Both bo unced off a nd kept going , b ut Faulkner's m uffler was pulled bac k a nd the sou nd fro m his bike stood out over everyone else in t he race, T he ru les say you m ust pu ll off the ra ce track at once because of the sound laws enfo rced by the sta te , He d id not and was excl uded from the event , Sandona went on to win, bu t was pu t in to last place , Non e of this sat too well with the fans or th e riders. but as t he ni ght went on and ot he r top riders ha d the sa me rules set them down, everyone got the m essage : Speed way is no t a co n tact sport , a nd you r equ ipment will be safe and leg al. Opening night sa w the return of St eve Bas t , two -ti me hold er of th e number one spo t in speedway. Steve . the o ld er brother of current title ho lder Mike Bast has won every tit le in speedwa y. He won the California state title a half-dozen tim es. He will fly down from h is home in Auburn, CA each week to race. Dave De'Tem p le , las t year's winner of the speedway sho w in Da ytona , was flyin g high all night , working his wa y into the H and icap Ma in Event . H e led the race for five of the six laps, on ly to give way to Steve N utter in th e closi ng few feet. The Scra tch Main Event went to Mik e Bast , who managed to stay upright after being hit from behind by A la n Christian. There was no one at fault . Alan was just a bit too far sideways ' comi ng onto the straightaway. and the top put him on the ground , Gene Woods took second. and th ird place went to Ku rt Strom mer. T here are far too many new names at this point in the season. and to know where to start making predictions would require a computer. Bu t just a few to kee p an eye on wou ld be Ma rgo King , the you ng female star of the AMA, M ar k D e tt e r , winner of tonight's Divisio n Three Ma in Event , Kevin W eed a , ta ll wit h the look of Da nny Becker . a nd Rusty H oward , the win ne r of the Second Divisio n Main Even t.
