"I crashed once in both motes," said 125cc w inner Broc Glover. It didn't bother him too much - he won both. 12S/2S0cc National Championship MX Series - Rounds 4/4 . Yamaha's steamrollercrushes , he midwest t By Jim Gianatsis HERMAN, NE, APR . 22 Team Yamaha continued its sweep In the 125cc and 250cc classes at round four of the AMA National Championship MX Series with Broc Glover and Bob Hannah scoring moto wins at Omaha M ota Spo rt Park. Hannah's Na tional winning streak no w sta nds at eig ht ou t of eight motos run in the 250cc class 6 aboard his OW-40 works Yamaha , while Glover's winning st reak is nearly as good with seve n m oto wins to his credit wit h his new lightweight O W -42 Ya maha . T he roll ing co urse outside of the sm all Nebraska fa rm town was fast , punctuated with man-made jumps a nd deep-walled berms. The riders would have like more difficult MX terrai n, but many felt it was better than what they had raced on in the series thus far. 125 National The battle of the lightweight brigade touched off at the beginning of the afternoon with Broc Glover ripping off the start on his Jim Felt prepared Yamaha as Suzuki's Brian Myerscough, Kawasaki 's "Teeny Meanie" J eff Ward with his Uni-Tra k and H onda 's War re n Reid la tched on behind in close formation through turn one. A little further back were Honda's J im Gibson, Moto-X Fox's Don nie Cantaloupi and LOP's David Taylor. The second la p saw Glover baili ng o ff at an off-ca mber t urn . T hat ha nd ed the lead over to Myerscough as Broc recovered in fourth position . Brian's lead shrunk even shorter as he clipped a trackside tire hanging from a post and went down soon after. Ward wicked on t he throttle of the green machine even more when he inherited the lead over Reid . Glover , Cantaloupi , then Team Suzuki's duo of Ba rn ett and Myerscough. When Reid spilled his Honda on the fifth lap, it gave Bro c a clear shot at Ward and the lead again . . But Jeff began proving the potency of the ne w bike as he held off the advances of the reigning 125cc " Na tio na l Champion. Amid crowds of heavy traffic near the mid-point of the race, Reid caught back up and zapped Glover for second place to turn the lead into a th ree-way battle again. Back in fo urth Mye rscough was still p ressu ring Ba rn ett , and Gi bso n was trying to keep Cantaloupi behind him. Lap after lap , Glover tried to regain control of the race, first repassing Reid and then working to try and set up a pass on Ward . Bro c Glover finally sq ueezed a rou nd Ward co ming out of one turn , only to boggle two turns later an d allow him to slip back inside. Reid and Ba rn ett and Myerscough weren't far be h ind . As they dived into the final lap, all hell broke loose . First, Ba rn ett and Mye rscough jam med their way past Reid for third - then Glover m a d e a move on Ward across a set of stadiumtype jumps to reclaim the lead , soon afterwards followed by Barnett getting by Ward as well . On the last la p Barnett had closed some five seconds on Glover, but Broc would reach the finish line first as Mark:S too-late charge left him just 10 feet behind Glover at the finish line . Ward was third with Myerscough fourth in a finish that ended the blanket race of moto number one. Glover re t u r n e d to assert his authority in the second moto as he grabbed the' start and led a ll the way to the finish. Both Reid and Ward had gone down in a first turn tangle and spent the entire race trying to recover , easing the pressure on Glover. All of the heat wasn't gone , though , as Kawasaki's Chappy Blose, Barnett , Myerscough and Gibson p layed passthe-handlebar over second place in the earlier laps of the race. Later. Ba rnett would break away from the pack again and put on a late charge which had Mark shrinking Broc's IS-second lead to just five seconds at the end . Ron T urner collected sixth, Pa t J a co bson was seventh with h is Bell eview Suzuki , and Donnie Cantaloupi continued to suffer ignition problems which also had hampered him in round one to leave him eighth . "I crashed once in both motos, " said Glover afterwards . "When I'm out front I lose my concentration and don't pay attention to my riding . That 's the only problem I had all day ." 250cc National If Broc had a problem in keeping awake, the job must have been twice as hard for teammate Bob H a n n a h , pa rticularly in the opening 250cc class moto. Bob led from start to finish once again and showed how to make a race effortless and boring all at th e same time. Suzuki ace Kent Howerton got off in second behind Hannah and stayed there the whole moto some 10 seconds behind. Next came Jimmy Weinert on the Uni -Trak Kawasaki, Husqvarna 's Ron Sun, Honda of Las Vegas' Len Giger , DG 's John Savitski on a Yamaha , Moto-X Fox 's Larry Wosick, Suzuki's Scott Gillman and Team Honda 's Marty Tripes. _ The ac tion ce ntered on a Savitskil Sun/Wosick battle over fift h position after Marty Tripes had gotten by into fourth p lace and then began to play tag with Weinert for third . Lap after lap Tripes and Weinert cut inside each other to trade positions. With only two laps to go, the Typhoon mad e his p ass stick and p ulled out a slight lead. But Marty didn't like the way his new long-stroke RC works Honda was performing and waved Weinert by on the last lap to let him recl a im third behind Hannah and Howerton . LOP's Mark G regson p ut on a spiri ted charge in the late stages of the moto to take sixth amid the battle between Sun , Wosick and Husky's Mark Robillard. Hannah went on to give Yamaha a perfect holeshot record for the da y as he pulled out the lea d of the last 250cc m oto, o nly to fall halfway around the first lap and turn the race over to Weinert . Howerton also fell on the opening lap, and the spill left-Kent with a twisted ankle. He was able to push his way back up to a strong third place finish ahead of Mike Guerra on Husky, Savitski, DiStefano and Wosick who was finally back in fo rm again after his Hangtown accident where he
