Soon th e gr ou n d return ed to it s natural sta te witho u t the help of ma n or wom an . T his perm anent da mage doesn 't see m to have been left a t Vall ey Cycle Pa rk . It is a lso a g reat p lace for someone to make a study of the effects of moto rcycle rid ing on open grou nd. I'm wr iting this letter to te ll someone of a g reat o p po r t u n ity for motor cycli ng a nd ot he r off-road peop le to make their own study of the effects. Wri tin g le tt e rs is a good defense, but it isn't t he on ly way. We need proo f that these organiza tio ns are not m ak in g studies th at are all th at true . I think it wo u ld be a good id e a fo r we r ide rs to collect m ot orcycl e in for ma t io n that can be us ed to p ro tect our rig hts to the use of the la nd we rid e on . A good idea m igh t be for someone who is good a t orga nizing things to co llec t photographs of the park while it was in use, Then take pictures of it now. With th e before and aft er pictures it shou ld n' t be too hard to show th at this "permanent damage" that some people are talking about is nothing more th an a lie. If people still don't beli eve it , they could come out here and take a look for themselves. . Armed with the photos and with any o t her informat ion that could be gathered up by the righ t peop le going out to the old park , we would sta nd a better chance at winning this war agains t land closure , Believe me , it is a war! W ith this so called gas shortage a nd th e rid ing areas that are close to ho me being closed down . our sport may lose the wa r if we aren't ca refu l. I tip m y helme t to people like t he Phantom Du ck and the peopl e at Cycle N ews who are tryi ng to keep the spo rt of off roa di ng a live a nd well. I do have o ne last co m ment to make. People say we not only d estro y land , b u t we also kill sma ll animals when we ri de . I still see squ irrels sit ti ng on the fence posts as we pass by Vall ey Cycle Park. I don't th ink I ha ve seen too m any sq u irrels tha t ha ve survived the tractors tha t ready th e land for housin g tra cts. Think about it. GLENN K . SCOTT: T housa nd Oaks, CA Where did the hitchhiker go 7 I need your assista nce in locating a hit chhiker I picked up in Daytona . H e left his leather jack et a nd eyeglasses in my van . All I kn ow is tha t he sa id he was an avid race fan a nd was en ro ute to Volusia Count y Speedwa y o n Wednesday, Mar. 7. If he would contact me with a description of the jacket and glasses, I will retu rn them , STEVE WOLF 40 -20 Wes tmoreland St. Little Neck , NY 11363 Hey MX Catl Well Cat , I've about had it. I'm tired of you hogging the limelight. There are other animals out there tha t ca n race motorcycles (bet ter than you I m ight add ). Take bears , fo r instance. We 're just more su ited to motocross rid ing than dumb cats. We are st ro nge r and have better endurance. We also like water (m ud) unlike some other a nim a ls we know . And as for protection , we don't have to wear jerseys, pants or shoulder pads. Our hides are tough and our fu r is wash and wear. And as for gloves , we have padded paws (not scrawn y ones like cats). Although I do wear m y Norstar boots because I am sponsored by th e people and I think it is th e least I can do for th em. Yes Cat , I am spo nsored . I'm half of T eam Norsrar. Our other rider is Goa t Breker. (Coats are als o very well suited for m otocross as you may ha ve noticed.) I'll bet you r wondering wh y I'm taking my valuable time to write you. It 's like this Cat, I challen ge you and you r Hastevarna to a motocr oss- race . You can pick th e time and t he place . That is if you are not a Sca red y Ca t , I'm serio us. I'll be waitin g for your re ply. Move over Motocross Ca t, 'ca use Mot ocross Bea r is takin' over. MO TOCROSS BEAR Anaheim , CA We're not sure whether this is a genuine challenge to th e Cat, or a Norst ar plug . Papa W ealey wants to know if MX Bear is awar e that MX Cat has a completely -f unctional . and generally load ed cannon lurk ing about his head quarters . . . Edit or. ยป Hayes to Son of Desert Duck I recently recei ved a letter fro m someone known as the "Son of the Desert Duck - Quack! Quack!" Along with a brief message was an envelo pe full offeathers. Very interesting! Son of a Duck , you asked what you can do to help the cause ' of offroading. Politically, there is a great deal you can do. You can support the organizations that are working out front helping to solve the land use problems in the State of California National Outdoor Coalition, CORPAC , AMA , CORVA , California Associa tion of 4 Wheel Drive , M.O .R.E . - to name j ust a few : Also , look around - see how you r e le ct ed o ffi c ia ls and you r representatives stand on needs a nd issues you are interested in. Write th em letters , Ask them - "W here do you stand on land use ?" Do you believe that the land should be locked up so on ly two percent of the Ame rican people can use it or do you believe th at we as Am er ican people h av e the freedom of access of public land la nd th a t belongs to you and I th rough our heritage as Am ericans? Yes , Son of a Duck , there a re many things you can do , You ca n go down. and walk precincts for the candidate of your ch oice . You can write him "~ I e u e rs of su p p o r t wh en he d oes some thing that you like a nd write him a letter - hard a nd fast - wh en he does somet h ing you don't like! Let him know where you sta nd politically. Let him know what you want and what you need. These are the things that we, all of us - all Sons of th e Desert Du ck , can do. Thanks again for you r lette r and with a feather in m y cap - Quack! Quack! BOB HAYES Assemblyman , 39th Dist ri ct San Fernando , CA Short fable I d isagree with John Wyckoffs guest ed itori a l: I feel that our current use of gasoline is in itself wastefu l. The reason the government hasn't done anything about the energy crisis is because they are afraid of not being re -elected if they take strong a ct ion. Why I'd like to see all forms of in terna l recreation veh icles ou tlawed I'd like to see it illega l for a passenger car to d rive on the freeway at rush hour with only one passenger. I'd like to see a 50 horsepower limit on cars a n d 25 on m otorcycl es used fo r commuting , I used to go trail rid in g on weekends , but driving through that smog made me feel as guilty as I was. I have just one problem , I still have m y b ike, and it still starts fir st kick , The motor sou nds so nice . I'm go ing to end th is now , I have to go rid e m y mot orcycle .
