"Alley Oopl" Mackel's Matterhorn! By Dennis Greene ORANGE, CA , APRIL 8 Over 120 riders from as far away as Minnesota, Texas and Oklahoma came to climb the Matterhorn at Saddleback Park. The Saddleback HiUclimbers Association, ' along with Coors Beer, made their event part of the 1979 Cyclerama. The 120-plus' riders were competing in 12 different classes 14 . .. from 90cc Stock all the way up to the lSOOccOpen Exhibition. The climb site was a new cut in the 10·year-old hill. At the 400 -foot mark, a set of lights were set up to he lp score the. overall winners in each class . The ma jority of riders were easily scored by the footage covered from the bottom . of the hill to where th ey came to a stop on the mountain . To get a fast 'time score, not onl y did' a rider have to break th e light beam at the 400·foot mark , he had to get over the top or just settle for the foo tage. Cherie Larue was the first winner of the day in the 90cc class . She won out over two other you ng ladies; all were under 14 yea rs of age . Several riders in th e smaller class came close to th e top , but the hon or of being first over th e top went to W es Evans in the 20l ·385cc Modified Cla ss. Wes really had a day of it. H e took th ird in th e under 400cc Stock Class, he won the 20l ·!lS5cc Class. Wes also won the 600cc Modified Class and the under !l85cc Exhibition and th e !l85cc to 600cc Exhibition. The King of the Hill crown went io overall Open Exhibition class winner, Neal Mackel. He covered th e distance in 10.99 seconds. . The California · based Peterson family was ou t in full force , taking trophy and cash in six classes . Kerry Peterson won the Stock l75cc Class. Clyde Peterson took third in the under 600cc Modified , Kerry ran a 15.48 in the !l85cc Exhibition CI~ to earn a second place and his brother Gary took th ird in the same class. Kerry came back in the Under 600cc Exhibition Class to ge t third to yet another Peterson. Clyde, who got second. The event took j ust over six hours to run and was one of the best-run events of its kind in years , a credit to the club: Most of th e pit talk was about the upcoming W idowmaker Hillclimb in Utah . then the World Drag Hillclimb at DeAnza Cycle Park on June s. After all th e ' winners were determ ined.
