Bob Miller and Rod Lacey led the Amateurs and the Novices at the stan, but the Saddleback gremlins got in their way. Skip Cristy took the Amateur win with Ra nd y Morales in easy control of the Novice race from the second lap right to the end. Nonnan Byers was looking strong in the early pan of the Beginner class but there was too much happening at the end to say what happened in that class. just have to wait for the official results. Don nie Morrison had a really great start and went through the first turn looking like a speedway rider. Ed Arnet soon overcame Morrison's good begin ning and added to the ranks of the rnotocrossers in the win column. Arnet took the Expert class in a wire to wire ride, a performance m atched by jerry Ca mpbell in the Novices, Todd Cam pb ell in the Mini's and Lom e Crawford in the Amateur class. Rob by Kennedy, who ran second all the way in the Ama teur class, cenainly didn't make it easy for Crawford , though. The two were only seconds apart throughout the race. Mark Barrett and Ken Estep were mixing it up in fine fashion th roughout the race also but at the end, it was Estep who srepeed into the winner's circle. The ranks of the jr/Sr class were thinned early - even before the race, with two top riders, Leon Price and Lenny Hancock both out with' injuries from separate practice lap accidents. They're OK, but let's just say they are going to have to learn to kick start with a . cast on . Without Leon , Bill Saltzman would have seemed to be a runaway winner but Ron Holst was on hand to add a little competition to the event and it took Saltzman a litre effort to earn the win . There were more solo riders than teams entered in the Coors Team Race, considering the time lost in switching riders, it's not : surprising that a solo rider won. Kenny Upp conned his dad out of his bike for this race, having broken his own . Kenny's comment before the race: "It's a tank! The suspension is too soft, like riding a rocking chair." Kenny's comment after the race (having won easily) : "You know. I think I like your suspension better than mine." Kenny was pushed b y Donnie Morrison throughout the first lap but when Donnie had to stop to turn the bike over to teammate Robby Kennedy. Upp pulled away. His only competition from then on came from jeff Hayes who moved into second during the Morrison Kennedy swap. Hayes gave it a grand try and at one point, caught and nearly passed Upp but was trapped by a crashed bike on the. trail and forced to slow. Upp went into afterburner and flew home the winner. • . 00 ,...c .... c, « I-< Larry Roeseler chooses TORCO GP-7 to finish and win. The Great Bear Grand Prix: 1700 entrants, 100 ml. a day.
