Kent How e rton 151 couldn't hold off Marty Tripes 1141. easy. I could have cruised . .. " he added. So that moved everybody up the ladder in the finishing order. Myerscough took second ahead of Jacobsen, Turner , Coon , and Cantaloupi. Jim Gibson put in a hard ride after going down in the first corner and came ' up seventh at the flag , ahead of Dircks and Pat Maroney. 250cc National Bob Hannah and Steve Wise's factory Honda led the way through the first turn. Tight crowd ing as riders moved toward the middle line caused a crash, and one of the victims was Maico's Danny " Magoo" Chandler, the Hannah-challenger of the previous . week. The crowding also held up Marty Tripes , the other Hannahchallenger. and put him back in the high 20's, posit ion -wise. Hannah and Kawasaki's ''Jam min' Jimmy" Weinert were rattling handlebars at the conclusion of the first lap , and leading Wise , Husky mounted Mark Robillard, Kent Howerton, Can -Am 's Tony DiStefano, Husky-mounted Mark Garrison , DG I Yamaha rider John Savitski, Moto-X Fox rider Larry Wosick and Suzuki 's Koji Masuda . . Hannah had dropped back to fifth by the next lap, with Weinert out front. Three laps later he was back in fourth and on the move. A lap after Hannah moved up to fourth , Wise put his Cliff White·tuned machine int o th e lead. Hannah moved into third on th e following go around , and he led Howerton, ..crowd, a yo r,ite, • Gil ~I~s, .r Serrano (Mai), Robillard, Savitski , Team Suzuki's Scott Gillman and Clark Jones (Hon). Hannah moved quickly past . We inert and Wise, taking the lead for good on the seventh la p . Weinert and Wise traded second for a few laps and then Serrano took a turn at the runner-up spot. Weinert dropped back to fifth behind Serrano, Wise and Howerton. Savitsk i and Gillman were scrapping over sixth , leading .Robillard and up-from -way-the-beck in-the-back -of-the-pack Marty T ripes. While Hannah was out of reach in first place , second was up for grabs among three rid ers. In th e space of three la ps, Serrano ; W ise a n d Howerton all had th eir tu rn in second , with Howerton 's cla im to it being t he longest -lasting right to th e checkered flag . Wise settled int o thir d with Serrano fourth and Weinert fifth . Tripes continued his assault on th e riders a head of him to fin ish th e moto in sixt h , ahead of Gillman , Savitski, LOP Yamaha -mounted Mark Gr egson and Robillard . Hannah and Serrano led th e second moto into the first turn, but it was th e Greg Arnette-tuned Suzuki with Kent How erton yanking on th e th rottle cable tak ing the lea d . Serrano , Kawasaki -mounted Robert Reisinger and Hannah foll owed Howerton toward "SuieideJump." The Hurricane moved in to do battle with Serrano, and got by him after two laps of conflict. The br illiant riding of the Tucson, AZ rider would soon go down the drain with a broken ch;t~~. r t . ... . J -" • :- J f ... " I I , f •• f ' After Serrano dropped out , Weinert , Gillman , Savitski, Reisinger a nd Ron Pomeroy were behind Hannah. The battle for the lead was really shaping up with Howerton not giving an inch. "He was really hauling ass," said Hannah later. " My rear tire was starting to lose air a couple of laps before Hannah passed me . A lap after he got by, th e tire went totally flat ," said Howerton. Once Hannah got past, and Howerton slowed with a flat tir e, it was much th e sa me as th e first rnoto. Hannah's margin of victo ry in t he sec ond moto was about one m inute . Tripes was again caught in firs ttu rn traffic and aga in had to start a cha rge to get b y the 25-plus riders in front of him . At the three-quarter mark . onl y Hannah, Howerton and We inert were ahead of him , with Gillman , Sa vitski, Husky-mounted Ron Sun and LOP Yamaha -mounted Ron Pom eroy as his most recent victims . Tripes continued his charge until , with ab out two laps to go, he was staring at Howerton's rea r fender. With a flat tire, Howerton could not hold off Tripes' advance and Marty moved into second . Howe rton st ill took second . overall but Trip es retained second in the points sta ndi ngs behind Hannah's perfect 150-point score . Finish ing fourth was th e Jammer , with Gillman , Savitski , Sun, Pom eroy, and Husky riders Mike Gu erra a nd Mike Loeffler compl eting the top 10. • R~~\J !~s 125cc NATIONAL MOT O 1: 1.
