Bell, Breker split $5000 CRC! DGMX By Keith Clemons ORA NG E, CA, APR. 8 California Racing Club joined with DG Performance Specialties in presenting a $5,000 day for southern California motocrossers. An extremely large turnout of Pros ended up dividing $2 ,100 in cash and the sportsmen $3 ,500 in product awards, .. h d' I raising t e ay s tota purse to $5 ,6,00. ' ' Mike Bell (above) and Goat Breker (below) battled in the 250cc and Open Pro classes. and each took a win. (Below) Scott Cavness (1x) and Mark Brooks had their own Open Pro battle going. Cavness took it. 10 Goa t Breker returned from winning the Open Pro class in the CMC Golden State series to try his hand at picking up a few of CRC 's fast bucks. Mounting his Norstar -sponsored Husky for a go 'round with the 250cc Pros, he skated .off the line in fourth place and jetted his way to the front in just a few quick laps, where he stayed to win the rac e. It wasn 't all clear sailing for Goat though, the ever com peten t Yamaha-factory sponsored Mike Bell was also in th e con test and was hot on Goat's tail nearly all the way . Bell sta rted about five bikes south of the Norstar warrior, but that in itself was no problem, getting through the trafficis the name of the game. However, one of these evermoving pylons decided to lock horns with Bell and caused a tangle which they had to stop to undo. All in all, only a few seconds were lost but it was still enough to give Goat a good edge. Bell , however, was in no way out of the race . He caught up to Breker and held a position only four seconds to his rear for most of the race. In the final lap Goat was stalled by two lapped riders and Bell made ' up the difference. Going into the last stretch it looked like Bell might just take it over but when the flag flew it was Goat through first by only half a bike. Bob Elliott drove his Suzuki home third. When the 35 250cc Pros lined up again , Bell made a fast break from the pack and ran well out in front. Tim Lunde aced h is T&O-sponsored Yamaha into second with Breker lying third. Goat worked at getting by Lunde while Bell increased his lead. When Goat finally got around Lunde it was too late to catch Bell, but going into the last lap Bell flew over a double jump and landed with no gears. Bell lost his primary gearing and stood dead in the water while Goat caught and passed him to win the race. Bell didn't finish and Jim Tarantino moved his Cole Bros .-sponsored Suzuki into second place to finish th ere and complete the day in second overall. Third in the ra ce went to Tim Lunde bu t third overall stayed in the hands of Bob Elliott, who fini shed the race fourth . Bell and Breker met again in the Open Pro ra ce but the contest was not so severe. In the first moto Bell strea ked through th e holes hot and sta yed in front all the way to win th e race. David Williams ran his Malcolm Smith-sponsored Maico all the way around in secon d. whil e Breker nea rly cra shed going th rough th e first turn and took a last pla ce start which , even with his dramatic driving ability , was not good enough to make a win . He was able , however, to ~ork .his way up front far enough to fimsh third, Th e secon d time aroun d saw ' Williams take the holeshot and lead Bell through the first few laps but Bell was out to win and secured the lead in short time and . stayed there to win , making the race plainly his . W illiams held his second place slot for the overall in that position once again . Breker had to work his way up from behind and this time his major obstacle was a heavy dicing contest between Mark Brooks and Scott Cavness. Brooks and Cavness had battled it out in the first moto and were in the middle of a duplicate grudge match when Goat caught up to them . Locked in their own intense fury , they had little time to worry about Goat but he took them both with a bit of work and for the second time ended up with th ird place money. Cavness and Brooks continued their play throughout the moto with Cavness the eventual victor and Brooks finishing fifth . ' Mike Tripes pushed his screaming Suzuki through two winning 125cc Pro motos, taking top pay for that race. Second in the first moto went to Ed Amet but Ed finished 16th the second time around while Yamaha support rider Jim Holly, who didn't finish the first race , finished second in the second race. Second overall went to Kevin Steele who finished third both motos. Craig Dale went home third overall. • Results OPEN PRO: 1. Mike Bell (Vem); 2. David W~liBms IMaij; 3. Goat Broker IHusl.
