I , both for coming ou t and seei ng wha t the District scrambles folks are up to; it 's been eons since we've seen hide or hai r of a nyo n e from the; Sports _ Com m it tee except for our fai t hfu l stewards each year. Plea se come on ba ck . In the Min i class the ongoing battle continues between Roger Thompson and Curtis Cannon, but Roger ' lunched a gearbox and missed round two. He got all the bits emptied out and lined up again for the third one, but Curtis wasn 't ha ving any a nd went home with three straight wins. Bud Carroll came flying ou t of the hole first every t im e in the 125cc combined class and never lost the lead. First moto Mark Ledbetter passed J immy Snow for second at th e end of the first lap, and Ma rio Ayers moved on up to th ird. Snow took one trip around turn one way wide looking like he 'd found neutral instead of a usable gear, dropping way back along with J immy Rosa wh o wa s h av ing mechanical problems. Secon d round Darren Hulbert, rea lly good in the back section, got th e drop on Ayers coming out of it , and ran off with the second spot. Just a bit b ac k the threesome of Ch ris Chandl er , Ledbetter and Sn ow had a good on e going , with Chri s emerg in g thi rd overall. Chris Marrotte and Ross Kla tt were the two d ir ect transfers out of the 250cc Nov ice cla ss, but as reported earlier, the main was rained out. Stan Cal vez took th e semi lead from Mike Redding who really gets arou nd turn one in good style , with Phil Brill inger coming in th ird . It would ha ve been a good main. The 250cc Experts we re reall y honkin ' in th e fi rst moto . -Tornmy Walton took a trip off th e edge of th e track , Chris Cannon had the lead for a while , as Bud Carroll and Pete Hames settled out second right behind. It was a neat battle, especia lly when Bud tried to get second back and old Pet e kept shutting th e door, while in hot pursuit of Cannon . Appa rent ly though , th ere was some question able behavior on t he track - Cannon pulled off , Hames ended up way back , then loaded up and wen t hom e leaving Carroll th e firs t rn ot o winner with J oe Steffen second. Joe di d in Bud in the second m ot o for a " tie" in points but as th e last moto decides it , he won. T he second moto had a restart when T om m y Walton and Larry Bird ca me to grief going up th e hill from th e starti ng line . They occu pied th em selves with doing side by sid e wh eel ies aft er th a t and left the racing to those up front . Mike Montgomery went two in a row over Don Grigsb y in the 500cc · Amateur/Expert cla ss; Rex H ail ey got third and fourth wen t to J oel W indham . The fi rst and second place men in the two 500cc Novice heats no doubt would hav e made a real ra ce ou t of that ill-fat ed main ; th ey were Bob Eary and John Brillinger; Pat McCann and Mike McCauley with J ames Morris and Jeff Maddy being th e first two in the semi. Dave Peters gave Bobby Sanders a good go for a couple of laps in th e Open class ' first moto but com ing ou t of the esses Sa nde rs stayed to th e outside and took over as th ey headed into turn on e , and Steve Miller came up to take over th e second place . Sanders won th e other one too . along with Miller a nd Peters in the same positions but th e most fu n was going on right behind between John Wells and Pat Dobbins for fourth and fift h , it went Wells 5 ·4 and Dobbins 4 -5 so e "CRc"4'RACE'SERIES' ·'.
