Australian stars visit AME/Kawa Minicross By Judy Greenberg Phot o by Bob Greenberg VALENCIA , CA , MAR. 25 The picturesque Shadow Glen course set the scene for the third event of A :M .E.'s· " Ka wasa ki Spring Nationals." As in the past 32 . ,. event , all . classes were full with the competition stiffening as the serious nears its end . Derrim Porter and Steve Skilton, two of Australia's finest mini riders , joined th e ggcc Expert in the Stock. Modified and 1~5cc Open classes. The first motos challenged the two Yamaha -mounted Experts , as they adapted to the American soil and racing conditions. Bu t by the second time out, they had it mastered as well as the loca l riders. Rick Hemme (R&D) led in the early stages of the ggcc Modified Experts, tagged by Jeff Stanford (U.S. Yaml AJRP) , Johnner Kight . Mark Tomasell i . Porter and Skilton . Stanford took control by the th ird lap and wouldn't give it up. regardless of how hard Hemme pressed. Tomaselli haunted Kight , but then fell to the hack with bike trouble . Porter (Milledge Yam) mo ved in to fin ish fourth . The second time it was Hemme and Stanford from the start , but this time Hemme edged in front and remained th ere. Kight worked his way by Porter and Skilton and nestled into a safe third . until the last lap when Porter closed the gap to the flag. The overalls went to Hemme , Stanford and Kight. For the third consecutive week , Pat Galan took double wins in the Modified Junior Cycle Expert class . on his R&D Suzuki. Eddie Hicks hung .close to Galan in the ea rly laps , but lost ground as th e mot o p rogressed . Todd Bess had th ird sewed up , as Buddy Durno , Carl Tign ino a n d Mart y Rickard swapped the fourth spot . coming out in Rickard's favor. Things went th e sa me the second t ime. with Dumo finishing fourth behind Bess. Allen Hopper started the se ries winning his first rid e on a 125cc YZ. Today's victory put him on top for points, so far, in th e series. Richard Ising held Hopper off for a couple of laps in the first moto , but on ce in front , Hopper was there to stay. Ising. Eddie Green and Pat McConnell diced for the second spo t. with McC onnell taking the flag behind Hopper. Hopper ran in front for the entire second moto , leaving the action behind him . The order cha nged with every lap as Ising , Mik e Ya fchak , Brian Part . and G re en kept the spectators on their fee t. Yafchak picked up second before th e flag. but second overall went to Green. McConnell had h is prob lems and followed in the troo ps. Results PEE WEEMOD: 1. Just;n Souza ISUl l. PEE WEE STOCK:1. Man Blacklock ISuzl; 2. Kayle Johnson IS02); 3. Josh Melching ISuzl.
