Hess, Rhyan, Smith share CMC Carlsbad MX loot By'Mark Kariya CARLSBAD, CA , MAR. II The Continental Moto-sports Club hosted another day of good racing at Ca rlsbad which saw the return of some old faces a long with some inspired performances, Cliff Lett (Yam) grabbed the lead from the drop of the gate in the first 125cc Pro mota and reeled off lap after lap in front of everyone else. Doing his best to get around him, though unsuccessfully , was Randy Hess (Suz) who conceded the mota to Lett late in the race, looking to the next moro for revenge. Riding alone in third came Bryan Maloney (Esc) in his second Pro ride. He took that position from Andy Northrup (SOP) who drifted back to fifth, just behind Corki Moore (Suz ) and Scott Anderson (Esc) . Hess took his tum at the helm in the second rnoto, finishing a ways ahead of Lett 10 gamer the overall. Scott J oh nston (Esc) held third by a threat as he led a tight-knit bunch of riders including Anderson , Northrup and Moore. Anderson squeezed into fourth on lap 10 when Northrup's bike took a bad hop on the uphill. He was knocking on johnston's door on la p 12 but made a mistake and took a heartbreaking spill, putting him out of the money. Moore nipped J ohnston on the last lap for third pla ce bucks. In the 250cc Pros, Ross Learn (Suz) headed out with the lead. Steve Rhyan (Suz), back from a broken leg'suffered" last year, moved into that spot on lap two, settled into a comfortable lead and was the first to see the checkered fall. Tim Tolar (Suz) . back from the Florida Winter-AMA series , got on the gas after a dismal stan to wrest second away from Honda rider Clint Hardick. Juan Benavidez (Yam) and Robe rt Reisinger (Kaw) came through next , both after taking a spill apiece. Steve Jackson (Han) proved to be quickest out of the gate in mota two, -but Tolar and Rhyan blew by before the end of the lap. Jackson eventually finished seventh. Rhya n traded the lead with Tolar for a couple laps , but by lap four , he had it for good and went on to a decisive win. . Tolar slowed a bit. though still in front of Reisinger , Gary Truesdill (Suz) and Hardick. . David Fisher (Esc) showed the other 500cc Pros the way to tum one in their first .mota. Tolar and Mike Tripes (Esc) wrangled by him on la p one . Tripes took it from lap two and _ torqued his way to victory. Alan Sm ith (Hus) rode steadily and put Tolar in his sights on lap eight. Tolar. who wasn't getting along too . well with his big RM -N due to handling problems. went high on the ledge the next lap. Smith went for the opening and snatched second from him for keeps. Tony Wanket (Yam) retained his fourth spot . for the majority of the mota. ahead of early leader Fisher and desert ace Larry Roeseler (Hus). Mota two saw Tripes take the lead first with Roeseler getting an excellent start to put himself in second. Smith, hungry for a win , disposed of Roeseler on lap two and set out for Tripes. He took the high line on the uphill on lap four . made his turn and jetted to the inside , ahead of Tripes. They . held those positions to th e end, enabling Smith to earn the overall. Wanket was the on ly other rider to pass Roeseler who ended up a creditable fourth ahead of Fisher whose 5·5 finishes got him fifth . 125 INT: 1. Marl; 3. Marvin Olsen (Yaml. SEN IOR EX: 1.
