MA R . 5 Yamaha support ri der Ron Turner put on a dazzling d isplay of riding skill and stamina by winning both the Open and 250cc Pro classes at this week's Saturd ay Sad d leback Motocross. The big race of the day was the 250cc Pro class . featuring a n outstanding field of top SoCal riders . Leading from the start was Yamahamounted Mark Bohrt followed b y Turner and Maico rider Greg Weaver. Tim Lunde had his Yamaha running in fourth just ahead of Suzuki rider Tony Gomez and the Maico of Hu ff Hadley. Positions changed quickly in the first few la ps with Turner taking the lea d as Mark Lawrence charged his Yamaha up through the pack aft er a bad start to move into second. Gomez passed Lunde to take over third and then lost it to Hadley on the next go 'round . Far back in 10th spot , Goat Breker was just cruising on his Husky as he tried to shake off a mil d flu bug . H alfway through the moto Breke r started feeli ng b ette r a nd began to pick off riders each la p u nt il he had moved into fourth behind Hadley. Turner, meanwhile. had firs t a ll to himself and finished wit h a good lead over Lunde. With on e lap to go Breker p ut the move on Hadley to finish third. - Turner quickly jum ped into the lead as the second moto began. Be h in d him came Lawrence and Lunde. Gomez was running in fourth just ahead of Breker and Maico rider John Atwood . On the third lap Breker passed both Gomez and Lunde and started to pressure Lawrence. It took . three laps for Breker to find a way around but when he did he quickly closed in on Turner and the two began a classic battle for the lead. The racing was intense with the two riders often side by side and never more than a few feet apart. Finally with but a few laps remaining Breker clearly established the lead wh ile his bik e bounced wildly about the track as his rear shocks began pumping up. Breker managed to hold on somehow and , with a good .deal of flashiness. took the checkered flag in the lead . Turner finished second but claimed the overall victory by virtue of his 1·2 score . Breker took home the runner·up money and Lawrence was th ird . Pierre Karsmakers led the Open Pro class from the start but DNF a few laps into the race a nd Tony Wanket too k over the lead and held on to the checkers. Following Wanket's Yamaha to the finish were Turner and Suzuki of Anaheim's Scott Cavness. Wanket tried to repeat his win in th e second moto but an insp ired ride by Yamaha -mounted Bob Marino and pressure from Turner eventually dropped him back into third. Marino was first to the ch eckered flag but once again it was Turner who took the overall with two second place finishes . Wanket had to settle for second overall and Marino took th ird . Suzuki rider Jim Gibson walked away with the 125cc Pro class win with back to back moto wins . Gibson ended. each race with secure 20-second leads and was actually the fastest rider on the track for the day. Honda rider Bob Kline rode hard to take second place over Yamaha -mounted Andy Kirker who rounded out the top th ree positions. Results OPEN PRo : 1. Ron Turner (Vaml; 2. Tony W ankel 3.
