II The National Championships for Odysseys and ATCs had jill the ingredients for a perfect race. Competitors arrived from all over Cal iforni a a nd were greeted with a beauti fu l day , a super pr ep ared fou r a nd a qu aner m ile co u rse a nd th e prospect of p lenty of good ra cing designed to challenge the driving skills and endurance of all . Drivers were allowed the option of teaming for th e race or going solo with the majority opting for the buddy system. The ATCs took to the course first with the team of Ed and Tony Horst leading the way piloting their unlimited Class V machine . The team from Reseda were to set a pace for the 50 mile race that would never be seriously challenged but the action was far from dull behind them .-Pat Scott. who chose to go it alone was run ni ng second after the first lap aboard a . Class III Modified and nipping at his he els wer e th e team of Hutch Hudson, Sandy Horst and John Monnette and their Class III machine . Kent Moore and Abran Bernal were showing the Class II Modifieds the way but they didn't count on the faney footwork of John Borden and Mark Miller who moved from a fifth place first lap spot to a second by the end of two laps. Craig Tudor was having his moment of glory as he led the Class I Stock Division as a solo entry. Jolin Rowe and Pete Quadrozzi were in second. Borden and Miller held on to the second spot for one more lap until a mistake dropped them W seventh and as far as l Oth before they got things back in working order and were moving upward again . At the halfway point Team Horst . Unlimited , were still on top with Class I's Craig Tudor second and Paul Lepper , another iron man , third and leading the Class II Division and solo entry Pat Scott fourth , leading Class Ill. At this point the Class II team of Moore and Bernal got by John Lepper to take over the lead but Lepper came right back and regained it on th e next lap and held them off until th e white flag lap when again the tables were turned and Bernal and Moore wok the Class II win at the checkered flag . Ed and Tony Horst wok the overall 'a nd the win in Class V Unlimited with John Rowe and Pete Quadrozzi putting on a super display of ability as they came up with a fifth overall and first in Class I Stock . Pat Scott, C lass III was the only solo rider to come up with a win as he finished sixth overall . It was a battle royale as the Odysseys got right down to serious racing the minute' the flag dropped for the 100 mile race. Out on top in the bouncy little four wheelers went the Class III Modified team of Mike Wester and Jeffrey Billings with Tom Gildea and Steve Gildea . also competing in Class Ill , second and third . Rounding out the top four were the Class III team of Stan Sanders and Larry Beck . The fickle finger of fare struck immediately as Wester/Billings were out on the second lap moving Tom Gildea into first with brother Steve second and Sanders/Beck th ird. On the third lap the team of Pete .a nd Tom Lorinez got into the fray as they got by Sanders/Beck to take third and one lap later disposed of Tom Gildea to move to second. Both Tom Gildea and Sanders/Beck came back on the next lap to drop Pete and Tom Lorinez to fifth as the Class III learn of Bill Adams and Louis Bollattta joined the top dogs . Everyone pretty much settled down at this point to conserve equipment as well as bodies a nd at the halfway mark it was Steve Gildea first with Sanders/ Beck second and Tom Gi ldea third . The 17th la p saw things come alive aga in as Sanders/Beck su rprised Steve Gildea and ca me up with th e lead . It took Steve two la ps befor e he fou nd a hole and was a ble to ge t back on wp . He held on for two laps and ba ck ca me Sanders/Beck with the fina l pass of th e day as driver fatigue had to be telling on the outstanding solo performance of Steve Gildea . He hung in there gamely and was rewarded for his fine effort wi th second overall and second in class . Chuck and Gil Drinkhouse had no trouble holding off all comers in the Class II Semi Modified division as they led from start to fin ish . Richard and Don Beatty were second. Another member of the Drinkhou family also came away with the gold as Junior took the win in the Class I Stock from the team of Tom Lipari and Rok Rit cher. Results -OOYSSEY CLASS I STOCK: , . Foltz, Marinez smoke Racing WorldMX By Keith Clemons TRABUCO CANYON , CA , MA R. 10 Racing World Mo tocross fan enjoyed a full day of fun in th sun dirt bike style as Sportsm e and Pros alike battled the bum and grinds of the Many Smith track To add a pinch of special exciternen for the Racing World regulars, th course was run .b ackwa rds. wiping au any advantage gained by those wh have run the track so many times the could do it blind. In the 125cc Intermediates, Brya Jones decided if he couldn't beat th system by knowing the turns he 'd tak to th e help of a new bike. Jones pulle up to the track with a smi le as big a Christmas and unwrapped a bran new 125cc Kawasaki upon which h promptly pounded the soil taking bot motos. Better still he mainta ined rh front position without inrerferenc over the other 20 'odd racers to clea sweep the field both times . Now rh question is whether the bike or Jones a the combination of the two gets credi for the big win . Dave Foltz rode herd on the Ope Pros in the first race and even thoug he bailed out of the second mot competition. still went home a winne because payback was per mota an just a one mota win by Foltz paid fa his race plus a profit for the day. Mik Norris was the second Open Pro t cross the finish line. Fortunately Mik rides a Maico rather than one of th mopeds sold by his sponsor which , b it fate or . fortune. is called Mike ' Moped . Foltz was also Maico mounte and rode for Track and Travel. Mark Marinez held his Honda u fora two mota win over the rest of th 250cc Pros and also collected some a that per mota payback.
