Currently sponsored b y LOP on Yamahas , Stackable will attack the Supercross series on a 250cc mono and th e 500cc Nationals and 500cc TransAMA races on a b ig bore Yamaha. Fellow Austin Pro rider R icky Blackwell gave Stackable a good first moto battle. He led the first half of the moto and finished just three seconds behind the "Stack." After the race , Steve said, " Ri cky surprised mel I d idn't know he'd gotten that good ." . The 125cc Expert race was interesting in that two bright red . freshly uncrated 125cc Hondas took their places on the starting line. It's been a while since we've seen much red at the starting line in this class. Frank Tello won the drag race off the start with 'a Suzuki, while W eldon .R iebsch lea ger (Suz) , Mike Walcott (Ya m), Steve Turner (Su z), and others . motored behi nd. Some pa in t scratching in the first turn cha nged the order ' to Walcott , Tello, Keith Davis (Hon), Riebschleager and Bill y ' Harrison (H on ) on the first lap. • Riebschleager charged ahead three places on the second lap to take over the lead with a new model RM 125cc - Suzuki between his legs . Walcott followed closely while four seconds back, Davis was battling Tello for third. Pulling away from everyone , slightly, on every lap, Riebschleager continued his lead , while Da vis began moving toward the front and Tello began to fade. Midway through the moto, Davis, within four seconds of second place, was making his way toward the leader. Tello pulled off the front straightaway; his eyes were filled with mud and his goggles dangled from his neck . Two laps later , Davis took second place from Walcott in a sandy wash in the back section. He lost it again . a half-lap later when he went out of shape and too wide in a fast sweeper turn whi ch allowed Walcott to di ve in underneath him. After the moto , Davis complained that he 'd lost the air out of one of his Fox shocks and the bike was slapping him all over the track. Tello came back into the moto , but was too far back to be much of a threat . Riebschleager won by nine seconds over Walcott ~ who had a big lead over third place Davis, who in turn was limping home with half of a rear suspension. Suzuki mounted Steve Turner, of Cedar Park, Texas, had the next moro holeshot dialed in. but Keith Davis kept th e power on longer and wound up tangling handlebars with Turner through th e sa me line on th e first tu rn to ta ke the lead. Turner got bounced out of the groove , allowing Riebschleager and Walcott to drive past him. During the first lap, ., Walcott I went down hard while in third . Although he appeared to be hurt . he shook it off and re -entered the race. Meanwhile, Keith Davis, who was leading Weldon Reibschleager, had pulled away from the pack and a super race was on for the lead. At times Weldon crept next to Davis but Davis kept the advantage of the inside line and Weldon stayed in second place. It wasn't until mid -race tha t " Rip" got by Da vis, who went every which way but loose in the sandwash , gi ving Weldon a three second edge from which Da vis never recovered. Billy Harrison had fallen twice in the first moto but he brought his Honda from sixth place to third when the . checkered flag was shown. Tello and ' T u r n er rounded out the top five . Riebschleager took first overall with a pair of wins and Davis earned second . with his 3-2. Joey Balcom , of. San Antonio , danced to a pair of firsts on the long travel of a borrowed Husky in the combined 250 /0pen Intermediate class . Not only did Balcom win firsts in his Open class , but he won both overalls in the combined motos. Russell Chapman of Austin took home the 250cc Intermediate trophy with 31 finishes . The 250 /0pen Expert combined class became the feature race of the ' day as Au stin Pros, Steve Stackable and Rick y Blackwell tried to prove _ who is better. Blackwell rocketed a rapid red CR 250cc Honda into the lead off th e start as Stackable rode far inside past riders who had beat him to .the .d raw.
