FEB . 18 W hile a hea vy storm d umped a few million ga llons of rain water on Plym out h , and kept the less ha rdy riders at home , everything but t he spirit was d ampened a t the Sacramento J ammers Seventh Annua l "W ild H are" eu ropean scrambles . Charlie Ma rshall chalked up his . fifth triumph in a row , after ta king both th e Open Expert and the overall win . Marshall hustl ed his Carm ichael Honda/factory sponsored H usky (super tu ne d by Dan Calhou n ) thro ugh th e driving ra in to a two -and-a -half minu te lead over seco nd p lace finisher Kevin Ingall s, who was also H usky mo un ted . Danny Willis and Ga ry Va nderpool, both on Yamahas, kept quite a ra ce for thi rd going d uring m ost of th eir hour and a hal f m ile-ride. desp ite various problems. Willis, a la te ent ry, missed the sta rt but took off in time to make up the d istance. In the last lap of the four mile course, his 400cc ra n out of gas and he pushed in for third . Lucky for him, it was mostly downhill . Vanderpool , last year's number one rider a nd n um ber two for '79, apparen tly encountered some .tro u ble in the back a rea of the co urse, He dro pped several positions and , even though he regained fourth for th e finish , he never looked to be going - qu ite as fast as his usu al performance in dicates he can. Ed Marchini (Hus) motored on to the 250cc Expert win with an excellent ride over ' secon d place finisher Ba rry Anderso n ; Kevin H en ry got the third. Scott Henry was the wmner In t he sm all 125cc class . O ld T imer Expert Cloyse Holland Sf. was the first one in for his class , b ut disqualified himself after con fessing that he had made the last la p on a differ ent bike a fter breaking th e cha in on his own. All th e bikes were SO encrusted with th e wet black Plymouth sand , no one would hav e noticed . But Holl a nd commented that he co u ld not . in good conscience , acc ept the trophy. T he official win ner was Bill Onga, Somet hin g new at cross co u nt ry eve nts was a smash hit with th e water logged spect ators who stu ck a ro u nd for th e last race of the day. The Mini riders sho wed u nbelieva ble endura nce an d a bility as they slogged thei r wa y arou nd th e muck y co urs e for their one hour race ; they see med to thoroughly enjoy the rid e . The older riders could ta ke a lesson from these litt le guys , Every on e of them ca lled out his number loud an d clear at th e ma in check .
