The Novice class is always hai ry, but today there were about 80 riders going for it all at on ce. Bu t one guy, who 's been winning Sand Hill's Friday night rough scrambles is capable of winning anything. That's Craig Christian. riding for Cycle Gea r. Christian took the lead on the fourth lap and won the l 3 la p race, which goes to prove he has the ability to win any race he enters. Jerry Jackson , on his sharp Cycle City prepped Maico, led every lap of the Vet /OT class and Pa u l Wargo, after a long layoff, smoked the VetJrs. Frank Hastings Jr. hasn't won a race in such a long time he was about to give up, but the 125cc Novice was all his today. Sm iling like a possum , Frank too k the trophy for n um ber one. By She ila Turner CHICO, CA, FE B. II The m ain event program got underway at Cyclela nd Speedway rough scrambles as the 80cc Mini class took their respective positions on the starting grid . Tommy Seidel hustled into the lead followed by Ricky LeBlanc and Randy Hice who were bringing up second and third, Hice challenged on every la p but LeBlanc was very comfortable in his position and refusedto give it up. It wasn't until the final lap that Hice finally dived un der ' for second plate honors. Seidel was so far out front that no one had a chance but him , Jar the WIn. Billy Robinson was quickest 10 the turn in the I OOcc Novice final , closely followed by Richard Fox . Fox moved in on Robinson to take over the lead and did so on the third turn of the 4' .c I , ". ' same lap. Rob inson d idn't want to give up easily and tried his best to regain the position but time ran out too soon for h im to finish his quest. At the finis h, Fox came first with Robinson ... hounding his rear fender . Kraig Church grabbed the lead in the 125cc Novice main with Jimmy King, Mike Archuletain and Don Dabb relegated to second and third. On the first lap. Fox got under Archuleta , Babb too got by Archuleta and then proceeded to get Fox on the " next lap . Babb moved on up to second on lap three and King fell back a few positions. Steve Clark got by Fox for G third on the fourth and maintained his assault to catch and pass Church for the lead. The riders got more excited with each lap and everyone was going for the lead positions at r he same time . In the final turn" Babb overtook Church for second as Clark wisked across the finish home free for the win. Since he had to lin e up for the very next event, Clark was warmed up and set to go for the 250cc Novice class . It came as no surprise when he grabbed th e holeshot. leaving George Irwin and Steve Goss behind. Irwin got under for the lead as Robert Camel passed Goss in the next turn. It rook a few laps , but Goss regained third ' as Clark ran into - t rou ble and went down a little later on . At th e ffnish it was Irwin , Ca rrel and Goss in that order. D~n Souza took the lead in the Open Novice final as Tony Zoppi closed in behind. A heated battle developed between the two contestants as Zoppi a ppeared close in on every turn. But Souza stayed out front until the final lap whe n Zoppi finally got by just before the jump. Ron Arlt took an early lead in the , Open Expert fray followed by Ken Gray and Dave Ryan . Arlt put on quite a show for his first time out this season , but it's hard to maintain when Gray and Ryan -are breathing down your neck . The pressure finally got to Arlt as Gray got by and then Ryan did \ the same. Arlt went down in a turn on the sixth lap which put Ron Hastings j 'int o third . On th e final lap, the pack lost Ryan when his mount lost its crank . Hastings took second behind L G;ay, who was way out front for the WIn . The Old Timers and Veterans main event was a combined affair . Ph ilip ' · Frisbie (CCM ) jumped to the lead with Don Holt in second , and moving up from the back of th e pack , Expert Norb Brown (Suz) in third . Brown passed up Holt and held stea dy for th e next few laps . In the sixth lap , Brown got under Frisbie for a su rp rise win as F~i~1?ie .h!1ffe<;l in f
