------------------flood~d into the first turn ' with
Yamaha -mounted Mike Sho emaker on
top . Loc ey was ' buried 'back . in th e
pack wh ile Shoemaker took - clear
command. Second place was juggled
back and for th between riders in the
opening laps , but "it final ly settled
down in th e po ssession of Hondamounted MikeVan.Acker. Locey was
on the gas and by lap four, had moved
up to third place. He whittled down
Shoemaker's lead a nd on la p seven
made his move past Shoemaker into
th e lead.
•
Moto two again saw Sh oemaker take
the lead but Locey got a m uch better
start than last time and he was leading
by the, thi rd lap; _behind h im were
Sh oemake r wi t h Mark Parke rso n
(Ho n) in third. The overall win wen t
to Locey wi th se co nd goin g to
Shoem a ke r ' and th ird going ' to
VanAcker.
'.
The Open Pros had a tight ba ttle
between H al Stra uss (Mai) and Andy
J anni ngs (Mai). Jannings got the better
sta rt in th e first rou nd, b u t it wasn't
long befo re Str auss was up there with
him . O n la p three Str auss ' passed
J ann ing s b u t co uldn't p ull any
dista nce . After four laps of elbow-to elbow ridi ng . J a nni ngs was ab le to
retake the lead. Bu t a strong effort by
Strauss enabled him to take th e lea d
once again .
In th e second -bou t . Yamaha mounted Darren Oliver p ulled into t he
lead after Jannings went down in th e
first comer. O liver was unable to hold
off the strong ch a rge of Strauss. who
took the lead after just one lap . Back
in the pack we saw Maico-mounted
Bill Hagen and Ste ve Richa rd work ing
their way through the pack to take
• o~er second and thi rd. But we really
have to give a lot of credi t to strong rid ing Steve Rawson (Mai ). As the g ate
dropped for the second moto, Rawson
and his crew were just completing
replacing the spokes in his rear wheel.
By the time Rawson reached the gate ,
the rest of the pack was at least threequarters of a lap ahead of him . But at
th e end of th e moto we saw Raw son
taking the ch eckered flag in third
place. T he overall went to Str auss with
Hagen taking sec ond a nd th ird goi ng
to Rawson .
'
Tim Locey was back in th e winner's
circle again in th e I25cc Pro class as he
took the overall win . Mot o on e saw
Honda -mounted Ken Zahrt ta kin g th e
holesho t a nd the win with Locey in
second. Moto two saw the win go ing to
Yamaha -mounted W illie Sim ons wit h
Locey again in second. T he two
seco nd place finishes gave Locey th e
overall for the day with second going
to Zahrt and third going to Ed Arnet.
