Hopkins reig'ns supreme at Golden State finals By Paul Castoro HURON , CA , FEB. 17 Yamaha mounted Kevin Hopkins put the icing on the cake today at Huron Cycle Park as the crafty 125cc Intermediate rider secured 36 enough series points to claim high point overall honors during the final round of hot moto-action in the CMC/ Suzuki Golden State Series. Hopkins, after clinching the prestigious 125c'c Intermediate crown the previous weekend at Dunlap, decided to go for the gold here at Huron. The "gold" came in the form of a new '79 250 Suzuki RM that was awarded to the top overall points holder. John Gardner (Yam) tried to play spoiler with his come from behind charges, but the riding of Hopkins was absoluteIy flawless. R&D Racing Engine's hot prospect, George Holland of Kerman, showed the Mini Experts a trick or two as th radical styler powered his Dean Dick~rs~n, Suzuki R~ 80 to a pair of convmcmg moto wms, Kawasaki's Doug Chandler, and Jenson Cycles Allen Silhanek pestered Holland throughout both motos, but to no avail. Jeff Krekelberg's Yamaha was w~lI suited to the wide open terrain or' Hur~n as the 125cc Junior Intermediate. rider held off the charges of Rick Neilson ofVan·Nuys. Krekelberg went home to Eldorado with a perfect I-I score, while Neilson couldn't quite muster the needed power and was relegated back to second with his 2·2 showing. ' The big race of the day was definitely the second division of 125cc Juniors. The point standings were ultra close. Moto one saw series points leader, ~cott. Manning, charge o~f the gate and mto a secure lead which he held throughout the moto . Meanwhile, back in the pack, Jeff Burnworth, riding his Joe Erler backed Escondido Subaru sponsored Suzuki, was late getting out of the gate. The crafty Burnworth got it d ialed.up to the max and passed rider after rider in his quest for the series title. Burnworths' elusive victory, however, would have to wait - his left side peg had broken off. Burnworth coped well, despite his problem , and finished third in the opening moto, The last contender for the crown was - Clovis star Cooper Wallace (Hus) , who had a dismal opening moto, a seventh; his second moto win just wasn't quite good enough. Extra practice time, three motos, and double CMC points went to the top six riders in each class. The biggest ba ttle riders encountered all day , was with the mud . Water formed mini lakes in most turns of the track and the sharp right hander was used for starts. The riders made one jump , then through the pond , and from then on it was mud. mud, mud.
