class title. Breker and Staten would be the names to watch for . but Dan ny "Magoo" Chandler was in there to ride and pick up a little extra cash. As the pack headed for the first turn Chandler took the holeshot on his 450 Maico ahead of Breker, Jerome Heiburger , Danny LaPorte. Bob Elliott , Mike O'Driscoll and Staten. Rex was trying to get going but appeared sluggish early in the race and took a few laps before moving into fifth behind Chandler, Breker, Heiburger and LaPorte. Out in front , Magoo was running away with the race and the 'top five positions were evenly spaced out until the ninth lap . LaPorte charged up on Heiburger and put his factory- back Suzuki into third , bu t a la p later was ou t of the race with mechanical troubles. This moved everyone up a slot as the checkered flag came out. Moto two was again the race . Breker had to. stay with Staten if he wanted the title , and Rex had to get way out front if he wanted to rega in t he crown. W hen the gate d ropped it was Staten wit h the ho leshot, Magoo second and Breker third . On the second la p Chandler passed Staten on a fas t, - huge , stadi um -type jump in m id -air for the lead . and bega n another romp on the field. Staten was happy with second , it appeared , when Jerome Heiburger slipped past Breker for third . This pass started a tight battle that went on for six laps. before Breker finally retook Heiburger and third place. Sta ten was too far behind the roosting Chandler to go for the lead, and Breker was in tota l control of third place as the checkered came out , and the series went to Goa t. A rather uneventful 250cc race ended the-day. with Da nny C ha ndl er sending off the series the way it's been going for him the last two months. Las Vegas' Len ny Geiger holeshot the first moto , but Magoo slipped by on the first lap and proceeded to gain about five seconds' per lap on the second place ba ttle between Do n Franklin and Geiger. Franklin took over second on the th ird lap while Randy Lash followed - team mate Er ic Mc Ken na in fourth. Mc Ken na pulled u p to Geiger on the fift h la p and pressured hard . bu t Geiger slid out right in fro nt of McKenna 's Ma ico . 'a nd Mc Ken n a had no whe re to go but right into Geiger's back: Geiger.was tak en to th e hosp ita l for a 'sp ina l checkup afte r he regain ed his win d . In the second mota it was again all Chandler as he ran away wit h the win ahead of ' Franklin. a nd Sh awn McConn. who finished the first mota with a · crash three feet fro m the checkered , third.
