CMC/Golden State Series - Round seven Chandler, Myerscough, Breker take series titles By Brian George HURON , CA , FEB. 18 Usually when a series enters its final round of action, all of the individual class titles have been decided. But at the 1979 CMC/S\J.zuki Golden State Series wrap-up in Huron, two classes went right down to the checkered flag before overall · determi d c Iass ~Inn~rs were ete,rrnIn~ . Going Into Sunday s racIng, 8 Maico's Danny " Magoo" Chandler already had the 250cc class in the bag while .Moto ·X Fox rider Donnie Cantaloupi and Suzuki's Brian Myerscough found themselves tied in the points for top 125cc. Husqvarna's Todd "G oat" Breker held a slim fivepoint ad vantage over Team Yamaha's Rocket Rex Staten , and Rex hung up the 250 for th e day to go all ou t to capture t he 500 cc title for the secon d year in a row , Winning was tough on the fast Huron track. because horsepower ruled and the factory bikes held a big advantage , and when it was all over: Myerscough and .Breker were holding the plaques besid e Ch andler in th e winner's circle. First out of the gate were the 125cc Pros , and Suzuki's Scott Burnworth took the holeshot followed by Donnie Cantaloupi. Dana Waxham a nd Brian Myerscough . By th e end of th e lap Canraloupi had taken co nt ro l of th e race while Myerscough slipped in a distant second ahead of Waxham . Now the battle was set ; Cantaloupi was charging out front as Myerscough gained ground steadily every lap . For the first six la ps a ll eyes watch ed Canraloupi hold ing the factory works Suzuki of Myerscough off with his Moto -X Fox Yamaha . but at the ha lfway point every thing broke loose . At t he beginning of the lap , Myer scough pulled beside Cantaloupi on a stra ight, th en as th e duo exited a fast right onto a long, WFO stra ight, Myerscough's machinery flat blew Cantaloupi into th e fields nearby the co.irse. Donnie came right back , however. in the next sweeping turn as he dove right into Myerscough's rims and squared off the Suzuki. Aft er negotiating a ser ies of esses the riders were. faced with a nother long _ straight , and again Myerscough smoked all over Cantaloupi But th e Mo to -X Fox rider was really determined to sta y in the hunt for th e series titl e , and as they headed for a huge ju m p in the middle of th e straight , Canraloupi flew rig ht past Myerscough for the lea d . Finally, before th e complet ion of the long lap , Myerscough out -powered th e Yamaha . again and retook the lead for ,the thi rd and final time , The rest of the moto was spent pullig away, as Canraloupi had no trouble with th ird-pl ace Burnwort h , who was 25 seconds beh ind at the checkered . Moto two was it - the race . It was do or di e for both riders , a nd it would be taken do wn to th e wire . If either rider made a m istak e , h e would throw away th e seri es. Off the line it was Kawasaki's Jeff Ward with the holeshot followed by Randy Hess , Johnny O 'Mara , Cantaloupi, Steve Davis and Jimmy Holley , but Myerscough was back in ninth place after a terrible jump off the gate. By the second lap t he top five order was Ward , Hess , Cantaloupi, O'Mara, then Myerscough , and two laps later both Cantaloupi and Myerscough were in a battle for second with Cantaloupi holding th e edge. This tim e Cantaloupi could only hold on for two laps before Myer scough flew by , and h is chances for th e title look ed slim . In th e remain ing laps Myerscough pulled up to an unsuspecting Ward , but Brian couldn't get by th e quick Kawasaki and th e Flying Fr eckl e , th en the checkered flag came ou t and W ard took th e win for second overall , Myerscou gh took second to wrap up th e 125cc series title for U. S. Suzuki. an d Carualoupi ro lled in a very , very dejected thi rd . second in the series. Ji mmy Holley p icked up fou rth in the rno to ahead of 0 ' Mara .
