CA 90014 213-423-49117 ----'--l AME had a slightly smaller turnout of riders at Sprockets Park this Sunday, nevertheless, there were some excellent races and spectators were treated to some exceptionally exciting action. The Pro classes were combined in the same event and ran two 30-minute motos. Jeff Stubblefield was top ":Ian in the 250cc Pro class. He swept through both motos, picked up two clean first place wins aboard his Honda , ' and pocketed the top cash . Yamaha rider Darren Oliver and Maico mounted Wally Koch dueled to the max in each moto . Koch was really looking good in the first round . He put the pass on Oliver, then reeled in Maico riders Andy Jannings and Steve Richard , who were running first and second. Oliver settled into second after Richard and Jannings showed a bit , due to bike problems. II! _ second _ round action" things . happened a bit differently. Oliver turned the tables on Koch for the moto win . and he took the overall for the day . Koch was left with second and third went to Can-Am -rider Danny Thompson , Honda mounted Chip Chapman pulled off the overall win in the I25cc Pro class with Suzuki mounted Doug Nicol taking second. Mike Yafchak made it look incredibly easy as he blitzed his Yamaha through back-co-back wins in both the 125cc Intermediate and 250cc Intermediate classes. In the Open Inter·' mediate battle we saw a strong duel develop between Damon Webb and Mike Lopez . As these two smoked through both motos, Webb took the final win and Lopez settled for second. In the I25ccJunior class, the overall . went to Bill Dewing as he finished up with a 1·2. Chris McCauley handled his Suzuki well for back-to-hack wins in the lOOcc Intermediate class, while Jon Kelley took first overall in the , 100ccJunior race. LaD!, CA, FEB. 4 Rough scrambles actiVIty continued in the Central Valley this weekend, this time at Lodi Cycle Bowl. Ninety-three racers cornpeted over a smooth , natural terrain, one half mile course which eventually reached the dry, Lodi blue groove quality in spots. Modesto's John Brewer captured the day's largest class honors as he outdistanced the 250cc Novices in an event closely contested by five racers up front . Brewer held off Jeff Fulton and Pat Mellow for the duration as the pack shuffled around several times before these riders finished one, two . three . Feast or famine seems to be Richard Arnaiz's trademark, He bailed at Newman on Saturday, butreturned to grab the 250cc Expert event Sunday. Mike Lane holeshot both the hea t and main but ' could not hold off the hardcharging of Arnaiz and Alan McGehee who was on the 500cc Yamaha . Jor81's Suzuki had the 80cc Expert final dialed into the first three spots off the line as Aaron Hill , Tommy Knight, and Chris Carr jumped to the front of the main. But Knight bailed off hard in a slippery pit turn, and was run over, which left Hill and Carr battling for the win . National scrambles champ Carr made his pass bid on the white flag lap only to tweak the throttle too hard, in that same infamous turn, and also unloaded hard; leaving the win to Hill (making it two in a .ro w as Aaron topped Chris at Newman Saturday). Fortunately, neither Knight or Carr were seriously hurt and both menaced the track the · rest of the day. Little Steve DeLay literally blitzed a · combined 80cc race in both the heat and main (maybe Steve needs hi s' " Junior cards) ' while former Mini Experts Dennis Houser and Jerry , Lanning won the IOOcc and I25cc'.J Novice mains. Dennis aildJerry should 1 move quickly through the Novice ranks to bolster a sagging Juniorlj program this summer. Racing will continue in the valley for the rest of the spring seasoIJ with short track competition on the Newman quarter -mile every Saturday night u through March, and rough scrambles , events at various tracks through the same period. .f Results .
