In the 250cc Junior feature , series points leader Mike O 'Neal owned the first division with Greg Apostolou copping Division Two of the same class. O 'Neal is now barely out in front with 98 points while Apostolou has 96 . CA 92277 30 714/367-9179 Sands, Blood, Hopkins cop Golden State Crowns By Paul Castoro Photos by Patrick Caselli FRESNO , CA :FEB . 10 Kawasaki's Richa rd Sands, MotoX-Fox's John Blood , and Yamaha privateer Kevin Hopkins. scored enough points at Dunlap Cycle Park's second running of the CMC / Suzuki Golden State Ser ies to clinch their respective class championships at this sandy Sierra circuit. With just one more event remaining in the series , the points battle is in full swing; only three class crowns have been decided . George Holland I II , mounted aboard his R&D Racing spo nsored Suzuki , put together a very co nvincing double moto victory against newly crowned Mini Expert racer , Richard Sands . The fa ctor y Kawa saki - campaigner ,Played second fid dl e to the aggressive challenge of Holland in both rounds of th e revised "short cou rse ." Sands, out of West Covina, hounded the rear of Holla nd's R &D machine to fini sh th e da y with a safe second , . and in turn , clinched th e Mini Expert cha m pionshi p with his astoundi ng 103 series points. Moto scores saw Holland ( I· I ), S,!nd,s. (2;2) ,,:,~i le th ird place went to Jensen Cycle Center rider Allen Silhanck (4 ·3) . Newly signed Team Moto·X·Fox . racer John Blood ran into chain trouble on his trick Fox /Suzuki, but he still claimed the Mini Junior series championship: Blood has been really phenomenal throughout this series. The youngster from Hacienda Heights has piloted his Phil Blood prepped machine to win after win , and so far he's totaled 103 points with one race remaining, In today's opening Mini Junior round , Hank Will iams Erler (Escond ido Subaru) guided his Suzuki to whip Brandon Reyes , but in the second rnoto , Ken Morton snuck past Erlers to grab the final victory . Champion Blood finished each moto back in the pack after his chain flew off a total of four times in each race. The final Golden State crown of the day went to I25cc Intermediate rider , Kevin Hopkins . Throughout th e series Hopkins has shown. the consistency necessary to win a nd his third place finish in Division One put th e Canyon Country resident out of rea ch of San J ose's Mike Holmes. Ken McK enzie had master ed Dunlop's sa nd track while Holmes and Hopkins gave chase. Ho lm es took moto one laurels, while McK en zie d id likewise in rn oto two .
