The Junior Cycle Stock Beginners started the day, with Robert Paugh and Danny Lamb (Crossroads Suz) fighting for the first spot in all three motos. Dennis Ladd, Stephen Huglies and Chuck Torgeson kept the third spot warm as they mixed it up behind the front . runners, Paugh picked up the wins in the first and third motos, but Lamb's win in the second, 'a nd consistent riding. secured him the overall. Frank Darr holeshot the first moto of the 12 and over Stock Juniors, while Gary Ybarra, John Farr and David Ethell closed in tight. When Darr ran into trouble and dropped to the back, Ybarra took control, but not for very long. as Darr opened throttle through the pack to take the checkered. . Darr brought in another win the second time, but wasn't so lucky off the final gate when the tables turned in Ybarra's favor. Darr finished third behind Ethell, and tied Ybarra in points. but Ybarra received the overall for having the best finish in the last moto, giving Darr second. Italjet-sponsored Buddy Dumo rode to win the first two motos of the Stock Junior Cycle Experts, finishing with strong leads. In the final moto, Dumo again took command at the stan. His fellow Experts, who did some solid racing the first two times out, seemed ' to be plagued With problems, and one by one' studied the track on their hands and knees. Dumo, seeing his competition in trouble, slowed his pace for a safe victory, and a little whirlwind in the form of brother Ricky. an Intermediate, soared by to take the checkered. 28 Results Juni~rs. Greenway' and Burtt do it again atCoronaMX By Ron Lawson CORONA , CA, FEB. 9 Watching the Pro classes at last Friday's R.A.C.E. motocross gave one a strange feeling of de'ja vu; it seeemed like it had all happened before. And, in fact, . John Greenway and Danny Burtt were reliving past experiences by running away with the money in the 250cc and 125cc classes, respectively, as they do . almost every week. • In the duece-and-a -half race, Greenway powered his DG Yamaha to an early lead while Gary Jones and his Ammex struggled to hold down second place against Ted Hoyt (Yam) and Phil Thorstensen (H on). Jones seemed to be running into more than his share of problems and he let Greenway pull . a good lead in the first few laps. By the halfway point, Jones didn't have enough time to think about catching the leader because he was being kept occupied by Hoyt , who was getting serious about wanting second place. As they came around for the white flag , Hoyt had managed to pass Jones and even close in on Greenway . Thorstensen also passed Jones on the last lap to finish in third place. At the start of the second round , Hoyt jumped into the lead with Greenway right on his .tail. Greenway pushed Hoyt until the second lap, when he got out of shape and let Thorstensen by . One lap later, Thorstensen was kind enough to return the favor and Greenway was right back behind Hoyt. Scott Kinnie (Yam) also picked up a spot before Thorstensen recovered , and he held off the Honda rider for the rest of the race. The battle for first came to a climax on the fifth lap when Greenway grabbed the lead. Hoyt never gave up , but still it was Greenway at the finish. Burtt and his Redlands Suzuki totally devastated the first 125cc Pro moto. He had a strong lead on the first lap, and it just kept geningstronger. Many of the other favorites had trouble finishing the moto, but Dave Rose (Suz) took second ahead of John Silva and Andy Orescanin, both Suzuki-mounted. The next rnoto wasn't quite so ~asy for Burtt. Rose got the holeshot, while Bunt and Fred Conover (Kaw) diced over second. Both Burtt and Conover ' passed Rose on the ' second lap and continued the battle. Burtt held off the man in green by just a hair for most of the race. Near the end , however, Conover ran out of juice and dropped back to third behind Silva . Overall it went Burtt, Silva, Rose, Conover and Orescanin. The 125cc Intermediate .race was good also. Keith Williamson came out on top with a 2·2 score after first moto winner Randy Shoaff DNFed . the second time around. Moto two ' was taken by Fred Combs who took fourth in round one. The high school rider that caught everyone's eye was El Dorado's Randy Fleisher (Suz), who stormed the Mini Senior class . With more and more of the. hot National. riders coming out of the mini class , Fleisher might be a name to watch for in the future . In spite of his performance, however, El Dorado finished in fourth behind Norco, North and Hemet. Norco owed its win to a number of excellent riders. Scott Lantz took the 250cc Intermediate class' as well as the Open Senior c1as on his Husky, Mike Word won the l75cc Senior class and took second 'to teammate Alan Seeley in the 125cc Senior class and Craig Seeley took the 175cc Novice race . North still mana~ed to finish very close by virtue of numbers. Toby Maynard was on to p of North's win list. • Results MINI BEG: 1. Otis Cecil (Kawl ' 2. Joe Rincon (Kawl ' 3. Nick ColangBto (Yaml.
