II The second of four National Motorcycle Association Winter National Kawasaki Series races got underway at Saddleback 26 Park's O lympiad cou~ . and it was quite evident tha t Kawasaki's "Green Machines" were out in force. As the gate dropped on the first moto of the 1l!5cc Stock Intermediates. it was Robbie Nolin (Yam). Eddie Perry (Kaw) and Eddie Glover (Ka w) battling for that first place position. It was Nolin grabbing the lead over Perry and Glover and no matter how hard they tried. they couldn't get around the Yamaha-mounted Nolin. The second moto proved to be one of the best races of the day as again it was Nolin. Glover and Perry ou t in front of th e rest of the pack. but it was a nybody's 'gu ess as to who wou ld take the win . Nolin and Glover were handlebar to handlebar into every tum. The lead changed from Nolin to Glover then Glover to Nolin as each lap progressed. Meanwhile Perry. running a close third . was JUSt waiting _ for the two front runners to make a m istake, but instead. he went down , Dumping him back to fourth place. The batttle between Glover and Nolin had everyone on their feet in anticipa tion and as the checkered flag came out it was Glover bringing his green machine across first to take the second moto win . It was Nolin taking the overall win with a I·l! finish . Glover took second place honors with a scor e of !l. I and Perry finished third with a l!·4 . Kawasaki's "Gree n Machines" wer e in full command as the ga te dropped on the first moto of the Il! years and over S!lcc Stock Intermediates. Ronnie Eversole (Suz) got out of the hole first . but Taylor Marcell (Kaw). Tracy Meeks (Suz) and Randy Yetto (Kaw) were in hot pursuit. Halfway into the second lap Eversole . plagued by bike problems had to drop out of the r ace. putting Marcell out in front . Yetto running in the third place spo t made a spectacular move on both Meeks and Marcell putting him into the lead. Neither Marcell nor Meeks gave an inch and stayed right with Yetto right down to the checkered flag. The second moto found Yetto ou t in front , but again. it was Marcell and Meeks breathing down his neck. This time it was Meeks "struttin his stuff' as he' overpowered and pa ssed Marcell and then set his sights on Yetto. Meeks closed the gap between first and second very quickly a nd befo re Yetto knew what had happened , found himself in second with Meeks leading the way, It was·Yetto taking home top Clear skies and a cold wind greeted the riders and their support crews for this great classic . The Groundshakers M.C .. Casey Folks . Montie Gerber, Chuck Rush (t he camel), et ai , consis tently produce a tough and challenging race. The Camel Chase was no exception. Ra ins the day before made for a dust free course; much loam. berms and highe r visabi lit y resulting in maximum speeds . The circuit featured many soft sand whoops. rock y sections that had th e No vices pulling over . deep washouts and 1,Ile5a top trails with 100 foot drop offs on either side . The Expert start at 10:00 sharp (m ore like 9;55 , don't ever be late to a Groundshaker sta rt as Casey is no B.S . on race day and will start without you) marked the appearance of the great camel. Chucko Rush with a stuffed camel stra pped to his back raced back and forth in front of the starting line and then took off for th e smoke. About a minute later the banner went down and the chase for the camel began . Jeff Harper on a desert prepped Honda CR250R pulled a nifty holeshot leading th e pack as they stormed by the frozen 'specta tors doting the starting area. Ha rper, 19, MRAN card holder sinc e 1970 and form er MRAN 125cc champ has definitely been on t he gas la tely turning in top ten overall rid es on a MX bike with stock ge aring, stock tank and Fox Air Shox . Husky's Jack Johnson . winner of almost everything too k over about a half mile out and was never headed . Bu tch Laswell rode a strong second overall with Rod Ahlstrom finishing first 250 : th ird overall. Ah lstrom has also been smo king since ridi ng Pa rker with SoCa !'s Tom Brooks last O ctob er. Maybe the former 125cc gr ea t showed Rod some tricks. Heartbreak of th e day award goes jointly to Keith Ad ams and Conon Guio. Ad ams had fifth overall locked up for 95 miles on ly to DNF in view of the finish . Cuio, who regularly drives 1200 miles from Big Piney, WY , to ride MRAN desert races had passed Jeff Harper for sixth overall only to be centerpunched by t he beserk Hqnda rider in a bermed sandwash. Harper said " I was not about to let that guy (Guio) pass me so close to the finish after smoking him the entire race," Obviously steamed at the finish, Guio had no comment even for the apologetic Harper , Oh well , as they say in the Baccarrat pit. "next case. " The Groundshakers M/C would like to thank the following people for their support: J im Thompson (Fuzz foreman) , Southern Nevada Volunteer First Aid and Rescue Association , Greg Thompson (BLM). and a special thanks to all riders a nd their pit crews. II Fullerton Yamaha's Mark Ellis put together a hot ride at DeAnza Cycle Park to come up with first place money in the 250cc .Pro class , His main competition came from a new name. Scott Jonnson of GT Enterprises. and a DeAnza favorite from last year. Robbie Brand. Also returning to the MX scene was Craig Gormley (Yam) who just recovered from a serious injury. When they all hit the first tum at the start of moto one. it was Jonnson out in front with Gormley and Brand in close tow . Ellis was in sixth place but he was on the gas and soon he was right on Brand's tail. On the third lap , Gormley was already feeling the pains of his lay-off and he let both Brand and Ellis slip by . Jonnson, in th e meantime. had been quite successful in his efforts to lengthen his lead. He had opened a gap of about 10 seconds by the fifth lap. and he showed no signs of letting off. But Ellis still had every intention of winning this round and he slid past Brand and slowly started to reel cin the leader.. T.ime ,
