AME sportsmen are Pros fora day Blackie makes like Lackey at Old TimersMX By Laura Richard By Bob Alloy VALENCIA . CA.JAN.28 LONG BEACH . CA,JAN. 28 T he ad read "Be a Pro For a Day: ' and that's just what over 450 sportsman riders did . American Motocross Enterprises put It's hard to believe that Cycle Haven was once the home of several hundred people. Yet . in 194 1 the Americans of J apanese up a $2.000 purse for the event plus a lot of other prizes. Most of the riders had to compete in qualifiers in which the top riders transferred to the main events , two 12· lap rnotos, with the top five in each class collecting their share of the purse and riders finishing sixth throug h 10th receiving trophies. Mota one of the 250cc Intermediate race saw a good race-long battle for first between Bob Schulz (Thousand O aks Yamaha) and Honda-mounted Gr an Maben. Schulz took the lead off the stan but Maben pushed him th e entire 12 laps when . on the white flag lap. Schulz went down and gave the lead to Maben. Maben took the lead in moto two and fought off the competition to take the overall for the day with second going to Jerry Boyd (Yam) and Kevin Olson (Mai) taking third. In the loocc Expert class Allen Hopper (D&N Yam) took the holeshot and the lead followed closely by Matt Whiting (AJRP Yam). Whiting was able to put the pass on Hopper to take over the lead and the overall win with Hopper taking second and third going to Jim Coffey (Crotch Rocket Factory Yam). It was all Jerry Berlin (Ragged Edge Suz) day in the 100cc Int ermed ia te class as he took back to back wins, fighting off strong competiti on from Chris McCauley (Calif. Sheet Metal Suz) and Dave Calais (Yam). who finished second and third. The stan of the Open Int erm ed ia te race saw some 31 riders lined u p across the gate. and when it dropped Bruce Bro tckc (Yam) took the first turn in the lead with Scott Walker (Suz) in second and Bob Schulz (Yam) in third . As the pack started to spread out. Maico-mounted Rusty Baron settled into fourth . Walker was able to take the lead away from Brorcke, but th ere was no holding back the strong-riding Schulz as he put th e move on Brorcke and Walker to settle into firSt. Brian Vargos (Suz) moved his way up through the pack to take over third place, dropping Brotcke into fifth . Mota two again saw Brotcke taking the lead with Walker. Baron and Vargus putting the pressure on him. Walker took the lead with Ba ron moving into second. but a bit of .bad luck fell on Vargos and he had to drop back. A strong ride on the part .of Allen Decker OD Yam ) enabled him to pass Brotcke on the white flag to take third . The overall for the day.went to Walker with Baron taking second and third going to Schulz. descent were rounded up . put and kept in detention camps he re until the end of the war. Today the cement foundations in the parking area are the only rem nants remaining from those unfortunate days . Anyway. this day Cycle Haven was alive and with an entirely different at mosphere and sound. And . this is whe re 36 O ld Timers did what th ey like to do best race motorcycles. Marshall Jennings took the holeshot in the Master class and held on for four laps with great style. Then Blackie Lewis grabbed the lead and took the mota. Lewis had th e monopoly on mota two by taking the holeshot and again the win. Jennings was in there for a solid second. In the Senior Expert division it was Ray Sanchez taking first . with Don Jenson finishing a smooth second and Chuck Woody in there for third place. The second mota saw Woody taking off with great speed and looking great. He held on to the lead for two laps. Jensen then took the lead for the next four , but "Super Ray" had worked his way into the right position and took the lead to the finish for the overall win . Jensen followed Ra y. and Bob Millner won the third place. Expert Bob Crandall didn't let a tight track slow him down any as he smoothly took a }·1 in the first mota . Ed Johns battled and won the number two spot. Robert Berdyck took a third . In mota two Raben Ber dyck captured second place with a touch of class and Johns came in for a good third . Amateurs started with Tom Brown in the lead but he lost it on lap I 0 to Tom Vetter who then took his KTM to the checkered flag first . Leonard Sciacca worked his way into second spot and George O 'H a ver took th ird . For mota two , it was Joe Bra y who shot into the lead and eas ily carried it for the eleven laps to victory. John Webb stayed in there and won [he second place, and Tom Vetter took th ird, as well as the overall win. In the Novice di vision 18 riders filled the starting line to its capacity. Paul Mayhew shot int o the lead clearly capturing the mota . Wayne Powell dominated second position, Bob Klatt took third place, and Bob AlIoy hung in there for a fourth place. Mota two was cut short because of a first turn pile up . Many riders lost a lap or two before they could disengage themselves and their bikes from the mess and get on with the race . Somehow, Powell managed to rise above it all and he took his bike into th e first place position. Dan Harris worked his way into second, Alloy saw his way in for the third . a nd Bill Ryan ca me in fourth. Results 100 JR: t. Kurtis Wilder (Suzl; 2. Mark Clark (VarnI' 3.
