( and 'made for difficult riding. By the end of practice. however , everything was thawed out enough for a day of normal racing. T he Sen ior Vets. class had a good race going with DeAnza ra cing manager Ed Michetti out ' in front . Michetti . pushed his Crown Cycletuned Maico through an early battle with Yamaha of Redlands' Ron Brehm . and then took the lead and ran away with it . Behind Brehm was George Anderson (Suz), The next round was a re-run as far as Michetti was concerned, but Anderson managed to take ' second place away from Brehm. In the Intermediate Vet class, Yamaha of Redlands' owner Paul Wilde took the honors and Steve Symanski won the Beginner class. ' The 125cc Expert class went · to Andy Orescanin from Suzuki of Riverside for his first win of the year . John Silva (Suz) blew the start of the first moto and finished lap one half a lap behind the leaders. Orescanin. :in the meantime, was enjoying a strong , lead over Ken Odra (Yarn) and Doug Heil (Suz), and it was getting stronger with every lap. Odra managed to hold off Heil until he got out of shape on the white flag lap, surrendering . second place to Heil and eventually faIling back to fifth behind Silva and Gregg Gibboney (Yam) . Silva didn't ' like fini shing behind people so in the..next moto smoothly ran away from the rest of the pack" Gibbo ney was in second pla ce for th e majority of the rac e , and if he had remained . there, Silva• ,would have _ l _ ~ taken the ove r a ll victory . But Orescanin passed Gibbon ey on the seventh lap , establishing himself as a winn er in the overall sta ndings, Heil took fourth after crashing ea rly in the race. The 250cc Expert class saw Larry Ripley (Hon) tak e top honors with a dazzling two moto win . He was virtually unchallenged in the early laps of moto one , but Heil, who was ri ding two classes for Suzuki West, did some serious catching up near the end. HiDesert Honda's Dale McKenney also had to work his way up in the pack to wind up in third place. . In round two, Bob Broten got the holeshot, but Ripley and McKenney were right on his tail. Within two laps , both riders had managed to slip by Broten and they were soon involved in a battle for the top position. Ripley would stifl have taken top money if he had given in to McKenney's pressures - Heil crashed and was ' no longer 'within striking distance - but it was a matter of pride. Ripleywas first across the line and .first in line for the cash. Heil finished in third on the final score sheet ahead of Broten and Don Jackson (Hus): Results MINI BEG: 1. John Meshkoff (Vaml; 2. Kehoe, Holland splifNMAI Kawasaki opener By Carol Campbell VALENCIA , CA , FEB . 4 Surrounded by snow capped mountains and under brisk sunny' skies, the first round of the Na: tional Minicycle Association's Winter National Kawasaki Series got underway. To both the riders' and spectators' surprise, the Shadow Glen track at Indian Dunes was in excellent condition and not the quagmire of mud that most of us expected to find, The battle between Erik Kehoe (Yam) 'and George Holland (Suz) began all over again as the gate dropped on the first moto of the 12 years and over Stock Exp ert class. It was Erik "Earthq uake" Kehoe getting out of the hole first with Mark T omeselli (Yam), Jeff Stanford (Yam), Chris Mor ey (Suz) and George Holland (S!!z) in hot pursuit. Kehoe continued to stretch ou t his lead as the rest of th e pack battled it ou t. More y, who had been running in the fourth place spot, .j v r t v ~ ,\;:If l -)' d u m ped it as th ey en tere d th e sa nd wa sh, knocking him out of contention. The battle for second, third and fourth was hot and heavy and as the las t flag came out , Tomeselli decided to check on soil samples moving Stanford int o the second place spot and Holland into th ird. The second moto found Holland out in front with Stanford and Kehoe breathing down his neck . By the second lap , Kehoe had made his move on Stanford and was looking for Holland. Meanwhile, Stanford ran into trouble, putting Chris Morey into third and Mark Meredith into fourth . As the checkered flag came out, it was Kehoe taking back to back wins for first overall and George Holland settled for a second with a 3·1 score . The shoe was on the other foot as the first moto of the 12 and over Modified Experts got underway. It was Mark Meredith (Suz) with the holeshot but Holland managed to pass him before they reached the sandwash and Kehoe was running in the third place spot. By the second lap Kehoe had caught and passed Meredith and was hot on Holland's ta il. As Holland and Keho e began to make their way past lapped riders Kehoe put the pressure on Holland but to no avail. Holland held on to take the win . It was Kawasaki-mounted Eddie Glover leading the pack as the second moto got underway , with Morey , Meredith and Holland right at his back doo r. Going into the second lap , Glover dumped his green machine. putting Morey out in front and in front he sta yed as he began to stretch out his lead over Holland, Mered ith and Kehoe . It was Morey taking the second moto win , but Holland took the top honors with a 1·2 score . The appear.ance of 'J ammin' Jimmy Weinert from Team Kawasaki added to the excitement of the day, Jimmy was bombarded with qu estions from riders and parents alike. The three rema ining Kawasaki Series races are scheduled for Feb. 18 at Sunrise Valle y Cycle Park and the grand finale on Feb . 25 ba ck at Saddleb ack where two KX80s and one KX125 will be won by some lucky riders.
