Consistently fast Charlie Marshall, wearing his number one plate for 1979, mounted his Husqvarna from Carmichael Honda and shot into the lead at the Le Mans type stan. He powered up the long hillclimb closely followed by Eddie Diaz's Yamaha , fellow Husky riders Kevin Engalls and Buzz Presser and KTM rider Phil Jacobson. Gary Vanderpool, Charlie's stiffest competition last year, had broken his motor the day before in a shakedown run. Near the Forest Service Heliport at the top of the hill , the riders plowed through the remnants of winter's latest storm. The slippery snow , .lasting for about four miles, caused Eddie Diaz to get sidetracked and lose a few places. The start of the second lap had the leading Experts still jockeying for posi tions through the left hand sweeper. Hard charging Scott Davis , astride his big red Ma ico, cut a path around the 14 plus mile course that took him past Marshall and into a short lived lead; but h is lead , unfortunately , was deflated by a rear flat. Marshall rode on to the win with Davis, a lap down but patched up , chasing him to the flag . Kevin Engalls was second with Eddie Diaz breaking up a possible Husky sweep by finishing ahead of Buzz Presser . Rob Sutliff, a you ng and well respected enduro rider, started in the second wave (juniors) and put on a blazing display of how fast a well versed enduro rider can go . In a charge that swept him through the Expert ranks and within striking distance of the leaders, Rob turned one of the fastest lap times of the day . Rich Rumsey, who constantly places well in the Veterans class, came out to show the youngsters a thing or two in the Open Juniors bash and fin ished second on ly to Sutliff. Speaking of kids , th ree ride rs (all past 50 years , with one pushing 60) were cowtrailing in th e area th e da y before and found out about the even t. . They showed up Sunday morning, bought their cards, entries, etc ., and put their four. stroke singles on th e line. One of the fellas, riding a stock looking 370 Suzuki, was seen motoring down a fire road . just beyond the snowy section. He had just passed up a whole bunch of Open Novices who were stuck on a hill . The 250cc go was a Husqvarna duel with Dave Bertram tak ing the win over Placerville's Ed Marchini. Junior J im Newsom rode his Yamaha to th e top spot in his class with motocrosser Jeff San Mateo County M C's "First Place Race" was a complete success due. in part. to the cooperation of M endicino National Forest Rang ers. One Ranger entered the eve nt and earned his finisher pin. =-==----'-------~::::_r~:o_:_~ -- Henning taking his fast and agi le SWM to second . Rider reaction to th is event, which was organized by some long time racers , was very positive. Comments ranged from "well organized and well marked" to "well laid out. " The club used a ' section of the Mendicino National Forest which included some nice rolling hills and fast fire roads that were pa rt of the Gri zzly Bear One Day Qualifier. A couple of new trails, were thrown in com pliments of the Forest Service, whose personnel are one of the biggest assets we as motorcycle riders have in this area . Help offered to the club by the Fores t Service included rerouting a section that had been laid out a week before but turned out to be unusable due to bad weather ea rlier in the week. The Fou ts Springs Boys Camp helped witli cleanup and supplied firewood to the overnighters. One of the local Forest Rangers rode the entire event and was seen after the final check with a large grin and his finish er pin in hand. Besides the pins, trophies and T-shirts were awarded to some well deserving competitors . Results OPEN EX: 1. Charlie MarshaIl IHusl; 2. Kevin Engalls tHus!; 3. Eddie Dial lVam). OPEN JR: 1.
