The start of the 1979 season was held under threatening grey skies that finally turned into a reality. . The Minis started things off, and . they rode under a dark cloud of their ' own. News had reached the you ng riders that their number one plate holder. Kevin Senn, had been seriously , injured in a freak accident before practice. As the green flag dropped, it was Bellflower Yamaha's Da ve Trager with the holes hot . This lead was short lived when International M/C rider Keith Senn, (Kevin's brother) moved his Yamaha out front . On the fourth lap Senn's chain came off and Shannon Shablin took the lead. Trag er spun out , quickly recovered and held 'o n for second. When jimmy Lucere went down on th e last lap, it was Tommy Combs who stole the show. He passed a dueling battle between Robbie Smith and Scott Geilenfed to claim third. The Seniors or entertainers, were the second ra ce of the day . Pila Pattison grabbed the holeshot - but Sugar Daddy Deckert was determined to give him a run for his money. Sugar Daddy gave it his best shot and was holding second when true to his reputation (he rides a bit over his head) , he overshot a turn, went down an embankment and watched as six of his friends went by. Now it was Lee Montgomery who was gassing it after Pattison, th e "Hawaiian." The big man kept his big lead but commented that if the race had been a little longer , Montgomery might have given him that run for his money. The 250cc race featured many crowd pleasers including jerry Booth, 20 , who rides under the. nickname "Peg,leg ." Booth, who lost his right leg in an electrical accident two years ;
