Saddleback Park played host for
the Sportsman Racing Associa tion's New Year grand prix. The
start of the 1979 season was held
under threatening grey skies that
finally turned into a reality.
.
The Minis started things off, and .
they rode under a dark cloud of their '
own. News had reached the you ng
riders that their number one plate
holder. Kevin Senn, had been seriously ,
injured in a freak accident before
practice.
As the green flag dropped, it was
Bellflower Yamaha's Da ve Trager with
the holes hot . This lead was short lived
when International M/C rider Keith
Senn, (Kevin's brother) moved his
Yamaha out front . On the fourth lap
Senn's chain came off and Shannon
Shablin took the lead. Trag er spun
out , quickly recovered and held 'o n for
second. When jimmy Lucere went
down on th e last lap, it was Tommy
Combs who stole the show. He passed
a dueling battle between Robbie
Smith and Scott Geilenfed to claim
third.
The Seniors or entertainers, were
the second ra ce of the day . Pila
Pattison grabbed the holeshot - but
Sugar Daddy Deckert was determined
to give him a run for his money. Sugar
Daddy gave it his best shot and was
holding second when true to his
reputation (he rides a bit over his
head) , he overshot a turn, went down
an embankment and watched as six of
his friends went by.
Now it was Lee Montgomery who
was gassing it after Pattison, th e
"Hawaiian." The big man kept his big
lead but commented that if the race
had been a little longer , Montgomery
might have given him that run for his
money.
The 250cc race featured many
crowd pleasers including jerry Booth,
20 , who rides under the. nickname
"Peg,leg ." Booth, who lost his right leg
in an electrical accident two years ;
