Houston! , Complete coverage of the Winston Pro Series opener 28 Ricky Glaser . po werin g a pair of Rose Ri ch Yamahas, put a double-whammy on the local Expert class contingent and wo n both the 125cc and 250cc Expert classes, plus a bundle of cash. The 125c c class win was the m ost dramatic and hard fou ght as Ricky , Glen Johnson and Kyle Landrum lore at ea ch other in every corner of both 10 lap motos , Gl en J ohnson (H owa rd Racing Su zuki) led th e ea rly circuits of mota one while Glaser and Kyle Landrum (TCR Su zuk i) swapped the second posit ion a nd hounded J ohnson at th e same time . J ohnson bl ew a rear sh ock and slowed down as Landrum moved to th e fro n t. As the three rid er train head ed into th e fin al lap Gl aser slipped past J oh nson a nd on the las t stra ig h t he lit the after bu rne r and roc keted past La ndru m fo r t he win . In the fi na l m o to J ohnson and La ndrum followe d R icky Glaser into the first turn a nd again the three hooked up in a high-speed pressure cooker. G laser made the only serious m istake of the m oto when he gave u p the lead to Landrum -jo h nso n after he stalled his bike . In no tim e Ri ck y had picked up thei r d raft and. as he had done in the first race . waited until the final lap to out -m uscle J ohnso n and Land rum fo r the mota win and the overall . .When you' re ho t . you're hot a nd by the sta rt of the 250cc Expert class first m o ta G laser was co oking. It was H oward, R acin g Tea m m embers Glen J ohnson a n d M ick ey Pizzit ol a who po wered th eir Hondas to th e front and o u tra n everyo ne else . fin ish in g the mota with Pi zzitol a in ches fr om J ohnson's rear fender. Ba rt Batson (Cycle Sh ack Husky) battled Ri ck y Glaser for th ird as H onda r ide rs Dann y Scheffl er and Mik e Bod enhamer trailed. In the final d eciding ra ce , it was Pizzitola holeshotting for the lead. Johnson appeared on lap two to take it away but he crashed wh ile trying, and as he p ick ed h imself up a five rid er pack led by G laser, and in cluding _ Bodenhamer, Scheffl er , Batson and Pat Kahanek , moved around him . As Pizzitol a was headin g for wh at loo ked like an easy victory; J o hnson was rid ing like a man possessed a nd passed all bu t Glaser. On th e final lap Johnson caught Rick y's Yamaha but he cras hed a gain a s the two t angl ed . Glaser entered a ba ck straig hta way to find a furious Pizzitola tryi ng to restart his stalled H onda . Glaser cou ld n't believe his good fortune a nd m ot ored away to win the moto and th e overall as his 4-1 sco res beat all . Mickey restarted to fini sh third beh in d Bodenhamer and second overall . Glen Johnson limped across the line behind Ba tson for fifth in th e moto and third overall. Yamahas were the hot ticket in the Intermediate ranks . Texas Yamaha's Clint Ward picked up two class wins , but it was Yamaha mounted John Pollard who was long gone before the rest of the pack kn ew what had happened in the first mota of the 125cc Intermed iate class contest. Pollard went on to win by a 10 second margin wh ile Clint Ward escaped a dogfight with Hunter Carothers, Keith ' . Kram a nd Lou isiana ace Ben Cl emens to fin ish in seco nd . Ward , a vetera n performer who ha d dominat ed t he class fo r severa l m onth s, knew he had to pl ay fo r keeps in th e final ra ce if he was to defeat the you ngs te r Pollard . He went rig ht to wo rk at th e sta rt est a blishi ng a lea d that J ohn simply coul dn't .whi ttle dow n. W ard won t he mota and the ove ra ll whil e John Pollard took second ove rall after losing the fina l race . Keith Kr am , Hunte r Carothers , and T erry Yarborough were among the leaders throughout and filled the next finishing positions. Cl int Ward co n tes ted the 250cc Intermediate class and collected his second overa ll vict ory of the day. This time Ward easily won both rnotos despi te being consistently challenged by teammate T ommy Hudson , St eve Shelburne, and Terry Yarborough. Form er minicycl e t error Von Thomas , who practically needs a "la dder to mount his RM Suzuki , was tall enough to win the 125cc Novice class following a flag to flag blitz in the final mota. Von's th ird place fin ish in the first moto d idn 't hinder his cause as fir st mot a winner Dwayn e W egma nn fell b ack in th e fin al to third place and second overall. Bubba W est and Frank LeBlue were 1·2 in both motos of the 125 c c Beginner class'. They pu t on a great show in t he last race, testing eac h ot her every turn unti l W est ou tju mped LeBl ue on the fina l la p to win . Hu nte r Carot hers , who t he co m petitors call "gutsy" a nd whose sty le suggests the ragged edge , was unquest iona b ly fast on his way to t he 100cc class victory. Grant Sm it h won th e first moro whi le Ca rother s slugged it out with the troops but in th e seco nd m ot a Carothers was the q u ickest and beat a sluggish Smith for th e ove rall . The Sen ior Mi nicycle event shaped up as a ' shootou t a mong t h ree of T exa s' fin est . Da rr ell Whit e . Sa m my Sweet and Chu ck Da wson . White . on a Stubb 's Cycl es RM 80 Su zuki , was sim p ly not in the m ood to sha re either mota as he hol esh ot and won both ra ces go ing away . Sammy Swee t broke down in the first rnoto: Dawson was in th e hunt until he mysteriously fa ded back on th e last lap , allowing the Paul York -Bobb y Williams battle in to . second and third . In th e fin al moto, Sweet , on a Yamaha , chased Dawson's Suzuki but neither were able to match White's pace. Stacy Marek won the Junior Minieycle class but came very close to losing it . Marek passed Rose -Rich Yamaha teammate W a rren Dai ley on the last lap of the last mota to outpoint new class hotshot Bo Pennley. Marek led Pe nnley in th e firs t mota until Bo faltered allowing Dailey through at the fin ish. In mota two Pennley led fro m the sta rt a nd th ough Da iley and Marek pressed , they cou ld not shake him up . Marek's d espera te la st lap pass succeeded a n d b ea t m ota winner Pennley for th e overa ll. Results MINIBIKE JR : 1. Stacy Marel< 2. Bo Pennley; 3. ; Warren Dailey : 4. Ray W eeks: 5.
