IAbove) Danny laPorte made a winning debut in the 500cc race. IBe low ) Darrell Shultz and Carlos Serrano diced in the second 250cc moto. Danny "Magoo" Chandler made it two in a row by w inning the 250cc class. te dice to Dunes wins Peter Wanket and David Taylor , both on Yarnahas , Serrano pulled another runaway , holeshot in mota two , tailed by Lenny Giger who would soon DNF again with . the same chain derailment problems which put him out the first mota . Billy Grossi and Darrell Shultz moved their way up toward Serrano as Danny Cha ndler closed from behind in fourth spot. At the halfway point in a four-way free-far-all for the lead, Shultz passed Serra no for the front running position as Grossi bailed off in the sand wash again . Da rrell went on to win the final .moto in his first race and first victory for Suzuki since jo ining the team . "I th rew my front end in a ho le that first m ota and went over the bars . I reall y got used to the bike by the second m ot a . That new RM-250N was box stock. I'm just sor ry I didn 't do as well as the first mota ." At the end of the moto, Darrell had p ulled out a l Ovsecond lead on Magoo as Grossi repassed Serrano after his getoff to reclaim third p lace. Warren Reid then displaced Serrano for fourth place with the works RC Honda as first ,mota winner, Rex "Staten ran the second , . , ..... . . .. mota at what seemed a reduced place to collect sixth. And with Staten's poor finish , the overall win went to Danny "Magoo " Chandler on the Maico from Ra ncho Cordova Suzuki . Grossi tied Magoo for the overall points on his Moto ·X Fox Hond a . SOOcc Rex Staten did well in the first mota of the 500cc class , winning it with his YZ400F Yamaha as Danny Chandler once again challenged from behind for a couple of laps before crashing. Magoo spent more than a few seconds removing hi mself from the mud hole where he landed, but got ba ck into the race quickly and caught Rex again to try and ta ke the lead , on ly to hit a bad b ump and get pitched over the handlebars again. , Da nny La Porte, in his first race of the year and aboard an R N -420 works bike, steadi ly worked up to pass RMmounted teammate Scott Gillman to claim second spot. Billy Grossi and Husky's Goat Brek er took third and fourth as they displaced Gillman . Then in the second mot a " Rocket Rex " Staten fin ished poorly again to put himself ou t of any shot at th e da y's overallwin. probably discouraged by a first -lap fall that left him next-to-last with only Billy Grossi further back. Danny La Porte got off the line second this time behind teammate Gillman, then passed Scott on the fourth lap for the lead which would last to the finish , The running order amid battles had LaPorte ahead of Gillman, then Eric McKenna , Jerome Heiberger , Goat Breker and Dave Williams. Despite his last place start after crashing and being left half ' a lap behind , Billy Grossi sailed his way up past Breker and into fifth place at just past the ha lfway point , only to crash again . The " Bear" was obviously fast , but he was also spending more time on the ground tha n anyone else . "I'm just getting used to my speed again. It's been so long since I rode fast ... it's a ll new to me ," he said. Once the new Bill y Grossi does get dia led -in again to going fast, the results shou ld be mighty impressive. Next weekend, the Suzuki Go lden Stat e Ser ies will move down to Carlsbad , but most of the top riders will skip that one to head up for Oakl and Coliseum and th e first AMA T oyota Supercross race of th e yea r. The results at Oakland could very well turn out to be ' . cularly since the top stars like Hannah, Tripes and Ellis haven't been racing since last fall. I wouldn't be too surprised if Shultz , Grossi .or Staten came out on top with their first Supercross victory . • Results 125cc: 1. Jeff Ward 2-2 IKaw); 2 . Brian MyerSCOtJgh 4-1 ISuzl; 3.
