Tedder, Reid and .L owe split DeAnza MXmoney By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD . CA ,JAN. 14 DeAnza's long awaited $1500 purse finally came to pass despite the best efforts of Mother Nature. The event. which was originalIy scheduled for Dec . 17, was plagued right from the sta rt by dark clouds and an inc reasing possibility of being ra ined out again. But despit e th e weather. dozens of local Pros came ou t for a shot at the cash and many new names came to the surface who we ar e su re to hear from in the future. The l25 cc Pro race was th e first moto to get underway and , to say th e least , it was a n unusual ra ce. Lan ce Moorewood power ed his DG Suzuk i int o an early lea d over team ma te John Greenw ay (Ya m) a nd Redlands Suzuki rider Dan ny Bu rtt . Back in fifth plac e. ParHubbs was on his uniq ue Su zukipowered Ma ico DMG creation trying . bon .. ' (Suz) . Number on e on th e bad start list was Honda's Warren Reid. who was 17th around th e first turn . By th e th ird lap . however . all eyes had turned to the front of the pa ck where battlelines were being drawn in two different wars. Burtt had mo ved a round . Greenwa y ' a nd wa s now putting unreal pressure on Moorewood for the lead while Hubbs was doing the same to Greenway. Almost unnoticed . Matt Tedder of Suzuki of Pomona had smoothly situated himself in a stable fift h place. Th e d ice b etw een Moorewood and Burtt ca me to an end when Moorewood's Suzuki broke on th e fift h lap . A few seconds la ter Greenway went dow n and handed second place to Hubbs who wasted no time in setting ou t after Burtt. Before long. the battle for the lead was raging again . Hubbs was locking handlebars with Burtt in the tu rns and tra di ng paint in the straights as he tried every trick in the book to get in front . But Burtt held out all th e way to the end. Tedder cruised in to third place a head of Greenway and Mark E1lis (Fullert on Yamaha). Reid took sixth pl ac e aft er a long. hard push from the back of th e pack . Burtt proved how badly he wanted to win again by pulling th e second moto holeshot , This time . however . Reid was right up th ere in second place . Within a few lap s, th e .two riders had left the pa ck far behind and once again th e battle for th e lead was hot. Burtt was pu sh ing himself to th e lim it , bu t Reid just kep t on com ing . On th e fifth lap . Reid fou nd a n opening. and pu t it to use . In th e mea ntim e. Hubbs was cutting his way up after getti ng off the line in eighth place . He moved u p on Burt t on the seventh la and both riders knew th a t this was th e ra ce for th e mon ey. T hey started going for it j ust as th ey ha d in round one. but th is time th e tension gOt to Burtt and he fell in . a turn . allowing Hubbs a nd th e overa ll win to slip away . By th e tim e he remounted . he was in sevent h pla ce and had litt le chance of catching th e leaders. Hubbs had it made. He was all alone in second pla ce and he just had to stay there for four more laps to tak e his first big money race ever. But it just wasn 't going to happen . On the last lap the well-used Suzuki powerplan t lost a lower rod bearing. "If it had happened a few seconds lat er I would have been abl e to coast across the finish line and s till win overall ," a surprisingly cheerful H u b bs said later. "O h well . .. next time." Reid went across the finish line with a healthy lead over Tedder. Andy Orescanin (Suz) , Gibboney . and Ellis. T he first place mo ney went to Tedder for putting in th e mo st consiste nt performance of th e day . Reid was second and Burtt third . It might not have been Reid's day in the 125cc class . but he more than made up for it in th e 250cc class . Early in the race. Pryor Campbell (Hon) led briefly, but once Reid got into gear , nobody could to uc h him , Da ve Eropkin held down second place on his White Brothers Yamaha throughout the race . Th ird went to Phil Thorstensen (Hon) after com ing all th e wa y up from 16th place. The second moto was not qu ite so uneventful , but Reid still came Out on top . Thorstensen pulled th e holeshot and started to pull a lead on Eropkin , Mark Ellis (Yam ) and Reid , but on th e fifth lap , he fell and handed first place to Reid . A few laps later, Ellis put the move on Eropkin and they remained in that order all the way to th e end. There was no doubt that Reid was the fastest man on th e track a nd the huge distance that separat ed him from second place at the end testified to it. Overall it was Reid , Eropkin , Larry Ripley (Hon), Greenway and Robbie Bra nd (Yam). The O pen Pro class turned out to be a lot closer. Mark Page (Mai) powered his Maico into an early lead with Thorstensen (Suz) right on his ta il. Before one lap was co m p le te . Thorstensen stalled th e unfamiliar mount in a turn and gave his position away to Dave Haugh (Ma i). The rider that was on the move was Da vid Hopkins (Suz) who passed both Haugh and Page in on e swoop and then managed .to pull a great lead . J im Lowe (Mai) and Scott Ca vness both moved up from th e rear of th e pack and they were soon occupying second and th ird places. When the ch eckered flag came out. Hopkins still had his lead. but Lowe had ga ined. Of spec ia l int erest was Dave Ohl (Suz) , who was running his first ra.ce in the better part of a year. He started off in 14th place and finished in fourth . The second moto saw Lowe grab th e lead early in the race and run away with it. -Hopkins fell victim to a poor sta rt but worked his way up to second. The overall r esults went Low e . Hopkins . Tom Karos (Suz) . Bo b Maxwell (Mai) and Ohl. Results PEEW EES I: 1. Allan Brehm ISuz); 2. Kim Robert son ISuz); 3 . Julie W ild e (lnd l . PEE WEES II: 1. Sam Love ISuz); 2. Robert Lofi n (Suz); 3 .
