By Bob Alloy Staten strikes at CRClndian DunesMX VALENCIA , CA ,JAN. 7 By Brian George 'W HY IS SUZUKI OF VAN NUYS#11 Lewis tops Old Timers mudders The first race of 1979 was held on the International track at the Dunes . and was one with mud and water aplenty. Fifty-nine Old Timers showed up to slip and slid e at th e Dunes. The Master class saw Blackie Lew is take the lead in both rnotos and hold th em bo th wh ile riding through mud and wat er as if it were a perfect track on a summer day. Final placement was Lewis in first . Ron Miller second and Marshall Jennings third. Senior Experts were led to the checkered by Chuck W oody in moto one with Dick Frampton in the second spot and John SeIder in third. For moto two . it was Bob Millner who took and held the nurnero uno spot with Frampton in the second slot once aga in and Don Jensen taking third. Frampton took th e overa ll win . Ran Sanchez of the Expert div ision got the holeshot but lost his lead in the fourth lap to T om W idick when his bike seized . Tom then held first to the fini sh followed by Sanchez and Ed Sch eidler. Mo to two saw Ra y Sanchez again with the holeshot which he held on to all th e way to the finish . Dick Maseley took second and Ed Scheidler hung on for th e third position. For the Amateurs , it was Joe Bray's day with a b ig I -I . Bob Coffman took the second spot and George Spearing came in third in th e first moto. Arnie Adkison captured the number two spot in moto two with Don Hobson hanging in for th ird pos ition. The Nov ice d ivision was strongly represented with 17 riders . In th e beginning it was John T u rdo taking the holeshot , but he lost it to Gene Powell in the first lap . Gene held the lead to the finish with W a yne Powell ca p tu ring the number two spot and Dave Collins in third. and Dan H a rris fourth . CA , DEC. 31 On New Year's eve most people are preparing for a night of hearty pa rties, but at Indian Dunes California Racing Club host ed their Sunday motocross on a revised Shadow Glen course. Topping a good day of racing was the appearance of the second-ranked 500cc rider in the nation , Team Yamaha's Rocket Rex Staten. who wrapped up the 250cc and 500cc Pro overall wins without losing a moto on his production machines. Al Ba ker Suzuki's Johnny O'Mara roosted the 125cc Pros for an overall victory and Washington's Ross Learn brought his Dick 's Suz uk i in for the IOOcc Pro honors. Twelve 500cc Pros lined u p for their two -mote free for a ll that saw Canoga Park Suzuki's Dave Haugh give Rocket Rex a good workout both ro unds , b ut after Staten slipped into t he lead the race was over. Greg Draskovich piloted his Maico in for third overall ahead of Joe Price and Syclop 's Cycle's Bill Hagen. In the 250cc Pro dass Staten got off to two m id -pack starts and had to past early leaders Mike work Shoemaker, Bill Ovellette and DMG's Don Draskovich . All three riders put up a good fight to hold off Rex , but all efforts fai led by the checkered. O vellette finished the day at second overall with DG 's T im Locey third. Draskovich fourth and Shoemaker fifth . Robbie Healy holeshot both 125cc Pro motos , but after long battles with Johnny O'Mara, Healy dropped to second the first moto and third th e second time behind Gary Scheidler . Overall it was O'Mara , Healy, Scheid ler, Ross Lea rn and Jim Simons, little bro ther to DG Performance's Willy. Intermed iates ran beside the Pr os each time. and in the 125s Bobby Ryan and Mark La rnkja er each went 1·3, but Rya n's second moto victory gave him the overall . Brian Chereshkoff led Jack Bea rgs and David Hooper across the line for 250cc win while Max Eddy won both motes of the Open portion. Bill Edrington and Mark Gumpert followed . Results , ', ' .
