In the Veteran's class, it was • Paul Wilde, owner and operator of Yamaha of Redlands, who took top honors, Wilde had it sewn up for the last two months, but the races in the regular and Mini classes were much closer. of course', because the park is giving away a motorcycle to the winner of each class. It came down to the final week, but Don Sigrist will be awarded the Mini MXer of his choice and Dave Loyd gets to pick out a 250cc machine . The races got underway with the ~2 5 0 ~ S ·. EXPrrt , c1 a~s. , wl)'ir$ ••G1;ajg Gormley (Yam) and John Silva (Hon) were pitted against each other. Silva led the charge to the first turn, but Gormley was right on his tail and the two of them quickly separated themselves from the rest of the pack. W hen they came around for the second lap, Gormley was in front and shortly after that Silva went down, dropping all the way back to fifth place. The rest of the race presented no ·trou b le at all to Gormley who finished with a huge lead over Larry Ripley (Hon) and Chuck. ' Pettigrew (Mai). T he best Silva could do by the end was fourth. The next time Silva got up to bat, however, he got a home run . He pulled the holeshot while Gormley was back in fourth place. Once again they moved away from the group at an incredible rate , but this time Gormley was several seconds behind his opponent. Silva kept his lead all the way to the end of the moto, but Gormley got the overall win over Silva and Pettigrew . In the Open Pro class it was Danny Jean (Suz) who took top money after a close battle with Ken Taylor (Yam) and Chip Howell (Hus) . Taylor grabbed the first moto holeshot with Jean cl amped on his rear fender . Taylor, who hasn't mounted a motocross bike in about four months, did an excellent job of holding off the Suzuki pilot for the first few la ps, but ran into mechanical problems and Jean managed to get by shortly. Jean went on to win the race by a foot over Ho we ll whi le Taylor fell back to third. The next round belonged to nobody but Jean . Howell put in a valid effort, but once again took second ahead of Taylor and Tony Pena (Yam). 1978 wasn't a very good year for Dan Cannon (Suz) who on ly managed to pick up one 250cc Intermediate trophy all year due to bad luck an bike problems. But he got. off . to. mile loops made up the course. Kaplan led the race all the way . dicing with teammates Rick Finger and Chip Howell , and regular 0·38 riders Jim Rib ley and Randy Hollenbeck . On the first loop Ribley was hot on Kaplan who had about a 30 second lead . Ribley had Finger, Hollenbeck and Howell on his fender. The course was a fast one and Finger, pouring it on, seized at Corrizo Wash b ut managed to get it go ing and pa,.. Ribley, who was having tranny trouble . Ribley dropped third gear and Howell moved into third spot. Ribley kept at it, start ing the third loop with no third gear, but plenty of guts in the fast moving race. Kapla n was dicing it with Hollenbeck who moved up when it seemed the rest of tfie crew disappeared. Up by the trestle they went to catch the course and right on their tail were Finger and Howell. Ribley's tranny gave it up at the third check. .Kaplan , Hollenbeck and Finger changed places several jimes but the plucky Kaplan would let no one into home check before him. Kaplan, Finger and Howell are Team Husqvarna members but this was a play day and not an official team effort though all three were aboard '79 Huskvs and took first, second and third : Fourth was Hollenbeck , also aboard a Hush . The perpetual El Cajon M.C. Coyote Chase trophy will be on display: at Husky in San Diego with Kaplan's name in the 19th slot - a fitting reward for Kaplan who was born ' the year the coveted gold was first given .
