the opportunity to announce the '
winners of DeAnza 's six month point
series. In the Veteran's class, it was
• Paul Wilde, owner and operator of
Yamaha of Redlands, who took top
honors, Wilde had it sewn up for the
last two months, but the races in the
regular and Mini classes were much
closer. of course', because the park is
giving away a motorcycle to the winner
of each class. It came down to the final
week, but Don Sigrist will be awarded
the Mini MXer of his choice and Dave
Loyd gets to pick out a 250cc machine .
The races got underway with the

Gormley (Yam) and John Silva (Hon)
were pitted against each other. Silva
led the charge to the first turn, but
Gormley was right on his tail and the
two of them quickly separated
themselves from the rest of the pack.
W hen they came around for the
second lap, Gormley was in front and
shortly after that Silva went down,
dropping all the way back to fifth
place. The rest of the race presented
no ·trou b le at all to Gormley who
finished with a huge lead over Larry
Ripley (Hon) and Chuck. ' Pettigrew
(Mai). T he best Silva could do by the
end was fourth.
The next time Silva got up to bat,
however, he got a home run . He
pulled the holeshot while Gormley was
back in fourth place. Once again they
moved away from the group at an
incredible rate , but this time Gormley
was several seconds behind his
opponent. Silva kept his lead all the
way to the end of the moto, but
Gormley got the overall win over Silva
and Pettigrew .
In the Open Pro class it was Danny
Jean (Suz) who took top money after a
close battle with Ken Taylor (Yam)
and Chip Howell (Hus) . Taylor
grabbed the first moto holeshot with
Jean cl amped on his rear fender .
Taylor, who hasn't mounted a
motocross bike in about four months,
did an excellent job of holding off the
Suzuki pilot for the first few la ps, but
ran into mechanical problems and
Jean managed to get by shortly. Jean
went on to win the race by a foot over
Ho we ll whi le Taylor fell back to third.
The next round belonged to nobody
but Jean . Howell put in a valid effort,
but once again took second ahead of
Taylor and Tony Pena (Yam).
1978 wasn't a very good year for
Dan Cannon (Suz) who on ly managed
to pick up one 250cc Intermediate
trophy all year due to bad luck an
bike problems. But he got. off . to.
mile loops made up the course.
Kaplan led the race all the way . dicing
with teammates Rick Finger and Chip
Howell , and regular 0·38 riders Jim
Rib ley and Randy Hollenbeck .
On the first loop Ribley was hot on
Kaplan who had about a 30 second
lead . Ribley had Finger, Hollenbeck
and Howell on his fender. The course
was a fast one and Finger, pouring it
on, seized at Corrizo Wash b ut managed to get it go ing and pa,.. Ribley,
who was having tranny trouble . Ribley
dropped third gear and Howell moved
into third spot. Ribley kept at it, start ing the third loop with no third gear,
but plenty of guts in the fast moving
race.
Kapla n was dicing it with Hollenbeck
who moved up when it seemed the rest
of tfie crew disappeared. Up by the
trestle they went to catch the course
and right on their tail were Finger and
Howell. Ribley's tranny gave it up at
the third check. .Kaplan , Hollenbeck
and Finger changed places several
jimes but the plucky Kaplan would let
no one into home check before him.
Kaplan, Finger and Howell are Team
Husqvarna members but this was a
play day and not an official team
effort though all three were aboard '79
Huskvs and took first, second and
third : Fourth was Hollenbeck , also
aboard a Hush .
The perpetual El Cajon M.C.
Coyote Chase trophy will be on display:
at Husky in San Diego with Kaplan's
name in the 19th slot - a fitting
reward for Kaplan who was born ' the
year the coveted gold was first given .
