Kevin Senn, from Canoga Park's International MC Claimed the overall win ,
earning him the number one plate for
1979 . Mark -H eth , who's had a string
of mechanical problems lately. took an
impressive second and Jason Prater , on
a new Yamaha YZ80F , took third . A
new crowd pleaser was Bellflower
Yamaha's Dave Trager. The II -yearold started on the Beginner line and
finished fourth overall.
_Another newcomer , Lee Montgomery. dominated the Senior race.
He completed the 5 ~ -rnile course
laps in 6 ~ minutes and was threatened only by Competition Cycle 's
Charlie Conway. "The Hawaiian" was
running third until the last lap where
Clark Phillips edged by just before the
finish .
. The team race produced another
surprise for Roeseler.. Unknown to
Roeseler and partner Rick Finger,
Da n Miller and Dave Carlson were
rig ht with them for the last four laps.
When it was Roesler's la p , he ha d the
lead. When it was Finger's lap, Miller
took the lead. O n the last la p , Finger
was shocked to see the checkered go
out for the bike in front of him .
Although official results a re pending ,
preliminaries indicate "not paying
attention" struck again .
The always-smiling Roeseler said " It
was a fun day on a fun course." H e
had come out to test his recently
injured leg , whi ch fel t good , and also
to begin pr eparations for his 1979
schedule wh ich will be adding moto cross to th e ex isti ng SCORE ra ces,
District 37 and of course , the International Six Da y T rials.
Plante pulls a close
one at Corona MX;
Poly tops HSMX
By Ron Lawson
CORONA. CA , DEC . 8
Corona's long awai ted new starting gate was installed just before
race time Friday night and it was
met with overwhelming ap proval
by the riders. It was the same unit used
at the Anaheim MX Finals and other
supercross events. The gate is actually
made up of 20 independent sections
that fall back towards the riders,
discouraging overanxious racers from
jumping the gun with the prospect of
being held back.
When the gate dropped for the start
of 250cc Pro moto one, everyone got
out OK with holeshot artist Pryor
Campbell (Hon) on top . At the end of
lap one , however, it . was DG's John
Greenway in the lead. Joe Plante
(Hon) also managed to squeeze past
Campbell early in the race. Greenway
was buiJ,ding a bigger lead on every
lap . But the battle for third pl ace was
still hot. Dave Rose (Hon), in his first
race since breaking his ann several
months ago , . was right behind
Campbell and pushing hard. When he
passed the Suzuki rider, he pulled a
little on Plante, but it wasn't enough
before the checkered flag came ou I.
In round two, it was Campbell
briefly in the lead again before
Greenway took over. This time,
however, Greenway's luck had run
out. O n the third lap he went down
because of a derailed chain and gave
the lead back to Ca m p bell. Pla nt e , in
the meantime, was busy dicing with
Rose. T he two of t he m closed on
Campbell and Plante took the lead on
the fou rth-lap . For the res t of the race,
Rose tried unsuccessfully to move into
second place. The overall results went
Plante, Campbell , Rose, Greenway
and Bill Delevie (Yam).
Robert Gray took the Dusty's Cycle
banner to first overall in the 125cc Pro
class. The usual king of the class ,
Danny Burtt, has been kept ou t of
action with the flu for the last two
weeks so Gray has been ha ving little
trouble in taking that crown for
himself. Doug Lincoln (Suz) led moto
one for less than a lap before Gray sho t
by and disappeared . Brent Blount
(Suz) and Scott Paschal (Ya m) also
managed to pass Lincoln , wh o was
racing for the first time in quite a
. wh ile . The next match saw Gray win ,
but with more difficulty than before .
He spent half the race in second
behind Blount before finally breaking
into the lead. The final standings went
Gray, Blount, Paschal and Lincoln.
Poly High School took top honors in
the HSMX with wins in the 100cc
Seniorand 125' Senior classes. Tony
Rossett i (Yam) split wins in the 100cc
Senior class with Saddleback's Louie
Soto, but took th e- overall win . giving
Poly an early lead . Warren Bell was
the other Poly hero, taking two
straight wins over Marc Blount (a lso of
Poly) and George Roese .
