CA, DEC . 10 Sunday brought heat to Southern California for the first time all week , and Bultaco's "Bu rnin' Bernie" Schreiber cooked up a fivepoint victory in the ATA's ninth annual EI Trial De Espana, held in the back hills and gullies of Saddleback Pa rk . Bel -Ray-sponsored 'La ne Leavitt showed up. after a 8 Montesa was having carburetor problems and the acceleration was very poor , which was signified by a loss of eight points and only five cleans. "these are just like the world championships . only without the mud :" Section one started everyone out right . or more so wrong. with a quick run up a near vertical wall of bush dotted sandstone to a 180 0 at thetop , then right back down into some soft sand . Here another 180 0 had 10 be negotiated. which led up a steep rain gully 10 the exit. Nobody cleaned this one on their first try . The second sect ion was another torture . It started on th e top ridge of a bank. dropped straight down 10 the left. and led into a sandy right turn before heading back up at an angle . At the lOp ~as, a nother 180 0 back down, but a la rge rain rut in the middle caught most everyone's front, tire the first lime around . Then the rough st uff began . A short straight after the rain rut shot the riders straight up . then they had to come back down the side of it in a gully. At the bott om there was an unclea na ble right up a steep, slick rock face th a t ended many zeros before t he exit the top . Sections three and four were alan deep , winding gullies, with thr exiting up a steep bank and fou entering down right beside.
