WIRI-TECH 2139242111 Grizzly Bear _ International OneDay ISDT Trial . By TT Productions STONYFO RD ; CA , NOV. 26 The R ichmond R amblers M.e. spo nsored their fifth -One-Day Reliability T rial and drew a real variety of riders who came out to enjoy over 100 miles of good fast cow-tr ailing and five special tests. The overall turnout was small, ' partially d ue to one of die few remaining district hare scrambles being held that day and possibly partly due to the' high entry fee . But those who tightened their belts and forked out one fourth of a h un d red dolla r bill were trea ted to one of the best rides that northern Cal iforn ia has to offer. The event started at 8:00 a.rn . and more tha n one rider found his bike ba lk after sitti ng out in the impou nd area uncovered all night . Crossing a strea m at this time of the morning was a chilling experience but it was soon forgotten as the traditional climb up Trough Sp rings R id ge had you squinting at the sun and trying to loosen up those cold knees and fingers . . The snow capped mountains were coming up fast but the Ramblers mercifully turned toward Open Ridge and kept loop one in the lower elevations. Special test number one was in this section. A drag strip start put you into a little deeper-than-you- . thought creek, a little faster than you wanted to be going, and a second crossing led to a stream bed trail that eventually led to a nice road section to the finish. The adrenalin from this test usually carries over.to the roller coaster ride of O pe n Ridge and on to my favorite part of the loop, a twisty road through the oak trees just before the first check. Oh, it would have been neat to watch the flat trackers go through there. The experts Expert. There was lots of time at the gas check 10 lube. adjust things and grab a bite of some high energy refreshment before heading toward Letts Lake and the hill climb special test. This loop was right out of a northern California Christmas card with beautiful snowy meadows and ridges linked together with some big wide ice covered roads. As the Loop Captain . a certain " Slid e r" by nickna me said. "If you're going 50 mph on those roads and you fall off, you'll be going 70 before you stop!" The speed averages on this loop were lowered for safety and again most riders finished this 29 .9 miles with time to spare. . Loop three had everything from snow to dust. T here was Su llivans Ridge. which certainly feels like th e top of the world, looking down on mi nut e .spe cks which were riders who m ade it to the bottom after p utting lots of faith in mech a nical devices. This was followed by a trip back to the top via the hillclimb . T he longest of the cross country specia l tests was run and we rode through the area I call the " Rock Garden" before the last rush of roller coasters that led to the final descent off White Rock to the finish check. . The acceleration . brake test is very popular for spectators and the various methods of stopping a bike in a specified area had some riders being helped off the track by Dick Mann . Chris Carter of ISDT fame, looked like the man to beat at this one. The motocross grasstrack was tight and twisty with a nice cushion. Former District 36 Expert , Steve Cochran was out on a new mount and having a smooth day . Dave Morgan was really looking back on form after his bad crash a t a Two- Days earlier in the year and fellow Husky rider Jim Cushing. was close behind. T here was an optional tire change at the finish. for those woo wanted to gra b a few less point s. and bee r a t th e en d wher e one could mull over com pleting this day a nd wonder what a second one would be like.
