All the rid ers sponsored by Jensen 's took home th e brass. Steve Bevilacqua was tuned in for th e seco nd mot o whic h he won easily, but he co u ld n' t sto p Paul Sipe from tak ing Open Novice overa ll. Paul has been off for some time with a bad leg, .b u t it was in' good shape Sunday 'a nd he captured th e win in th is class . Doobie was sm oking again, righ t in the hunt for a second overa ll. . Doug Whaley put a SlOp to the winning streak of Alan Lored o by taki ng th e final 250cc No vice m oto with Lored o trying a ll the wa y to pass. Alan said he hit a ti re whic h bent his shift lever so he cou ld n't sh ift as fa st. Todd Trudeau was so ex cited about racing he forgo t his helmet and had to borrow on e , but he took a third . George Lower y had his Maico WFO an d looked like a tru e Pro wh ile winning the 250cc Junior class. Ro ger McCoy (Yam) had a good duel going with J eff Br amlett (Suz) but was able to hold J eff back for the win in th e 125cc Novice Division I. The Open Expert hol esh ot went to scram b les cha m p Dan Castelhano who ~col:l l~ n ' t hold back th e hard cha rgi ng MX rider Rob ert Congdon. Congdon won both mot es. W.o·sick wails at AME $3000 purse ' ~ountain High MX By Ann Mouse FRESNO , CA, NOV . 26 Round five of the AME California Championship Challenge series was staged at Mountain High , one of the nic est tracks in California. With pe rfect track co ndi tio ns and an exce llent Pr o turn out , we were 'Off to the races . . . In th e 500c c Pro cla ss, th e no rthern California 'rid ers wanted it to be known that this was the ir track and ,they wer e ready to go for it. The first mot o Larry Wos ick (SUl) , Don Franklin (Ma il. Bill Grossi (Mai), Va l Tamietti (Mai) a nd J erome Heiberger (Mai) wer e all top co ntenders into th e first co rner , with T amietti com ing out in front and W osick not far behi nd . Wosick soon ca ptu red th e lead over T'amietti , and Goat Br eker (H us) h ad come from behind to take second , Milan Garrett (Mai) was third . Ma ico mounted Bill Grossi , from Olympic Cycles in Santa Cruz, totally dominated the second moto of th e Open class, leaving Wosick, Heiberger and Franklin to batt le for second posi tio n . That they d id with W osick taking seco nd. At the end of th e day t he Open cla ss wa s definit el y dominated by the boys fr om th e north. Final pos itions : Moto-X Fox 's Larry Wosick first, San jose's Jerome Heiberger (Mai ) , second , and Bill Grossi third overall. Thirt y-two 250cc"Pro rid ers showed up to take a shot a t th eir share of the $3000 purse. This class brought us a real North vs Sou th race. First moto honors went to southern California's Greg Robertson (C-A) . Larry Wosick (Hon) grabbed the h oleshot and wanted to show Robertson around the track, but Robertson and his Ca n -Am had other plans. By lap four Robertson had slid by Wosick for the lead. Husky mounted Goat Breker was charging his wa y through the pack after getting- a bad start and was now running third . Jim Turner (Hon), Charles Holcomb (H us), and J im Elli s (Mai) were engaged in a battle for ' fourth position . The first moto finishing positions were Robertson , Wosick , Breker andJim Turner. The second moro once aga in brought us a rider from down south , namely Yamaha 's Ron Turner. Turner pulled the holeshot with Wosick in hot pursu it on h is rear wheel and Robertson was right b ehind Wosick . At the ha lfway mark Robertson had dropped back .to 10th position after suffering problems, but heaid a great job of passing and at the checkered flag for a come back to fou rt h position. Final 250cc Pro honors were: Larry Wosick (H on ), second Greg Robertson (C-A), and third went to M oto-X Fox's Jim Turner. It was now time for the small bore machinery to tackle the track . Today's turnout in the 125cc Pro class brought us some very familiar names ; Chappy Blose all th e way from Phoenix, Arizona , Johnny O'Mara, Jeff W a tt s, Jim Holley, Mike Preston and once again , La rry Wos ick . The first moto HP Racing Products mounted Chappy Blose was' in full control of th e t rack with Johnny O'Mara running a dista n t second. Jeff Watts (H us) a nd Michael Preston were having a close battle for fourth. Jimm y Holle y (Yamaha Support ) did a good job of catching up ·from behind after a bad sta rt , but had to settle for 10th. The second moto saw a change in the ac tion with Johnny O'M ara pulling the holes hot after a sta rt pile-up in th e fir st turn took ou t first moto winner Chappy Blose. But O 'M a ra 'd id ' not . have this moto easily, Suzuki m ounted . J on Nelson really gave O 'M ara a run , Nel son a nd · O 'M ara tra de d positions b ack and forth se vera l times before Nels on slid out' in a corner . T his left Jimmy Holley running in sec on d position . While th e act ion was goi ng on in th e front of the p ack Cha ppy Blose was blitzin' his wa y through traffic right and left and was now running in eighth positi on .
