Jr. SAN ANT O N IO , TX , NOV . 12 Rain , mist and fog greeted the ea rly a rrivals at Sa yers MX Park but it all burned off as Dave Stutts brilliantly sh ined on the O pe n Expert cla ss with a pair of outstanding wins . Bryan T aylor, th e 14-year-old T exas minicycle sensation from Bandera, helped warm things up as he took the Mini Senior class with a pair of wins on an RM80 Suzuki. No sooner had Taylor finished that race than he lined for the 100cc class , still on the RM80 , and blew their doors off with another set of matching wins . Bryan then got on a 100cc Su zuki , fitted with a 125cc top end , and u nofficially r ode th e 125cc Intermediate m otos fo r a ve ry respectable showing . Say ers Motorsp ort Park is ru n by the Dirt' Bikers of San Ant onio and when they put on a rac e th ey cat er to a great varie ty of rider skills. Am ong the usual M in i , N ov ice , Intermediate and Expert classes , there is an O ver 30 class , a d ult Su per -Min i cla ss and a Klunker -Enduro cl as s. What im pressed me was the talent of John Balcom in the Klunker class . John is a double amputee and makes his wa y to the starting line using a set of crutches. Rokon is liis choice as a MX scooter, because it's automatic , and when he 's on the track he's a terror - busting berms, taking jumps and ,collecting trophies . Ba lcom earned a second overall with 2-3 finishes in his class . . With 16 riders altogether , the Expert classes were combined with money pa id in each . class. The Open/250cc's held th e advantage for the overall. win on this track with long, flat, sandy stra ightaways. Dave Stutts d ial ed his YZ400 Yamaha into a big lead directl y off th e sta rt with Ru ssel Pow ers (H on) , Mark Olguin (H on) and M. Barry Ri tchie (Mai) gass in ' it for second . On t he first lap Da vid Daniel inserted his Can-Am int o th ird as th e la rge r bore scooters out-classed the 125s . Th e cl osest 125 cc wa s W eld on R ie b sc hl ea ge r of Co rpus Christi , buzzing his Suzuk i in seventh place. By the second lap the riders had p rett y m uch settled into the positions they wou ld ho ld th roughout th e m ot o . Da ve St utts b u ilt u p h is lead a nd com pletely ou t-cl assed everyone while Daniel took over second pla ce th ro ugh the white flag lap, but a fla t tire dropped h im to sixth overall at the finish. T he top 250 cc class fin isher was Russel Powers , on a spic-'n-span new CR 250 Honda , with Mark Olguin , in fourth , also Honda mounted . At the finish Ritchie was hot on Power's knobbies, but cou ld n 't do better than third overall with a second in the Open class . Weldon Riebschleager was top I25cc in fifth , and Keith Davis was runnerup in seventh. Frank Tello, a Suzuki mounted 125cc Expert, held second in th e 125's up to the closing laps when he j a m med his leg , aggravating an old ankle injury, giving him a hard-to -swallow DNF for the first rnoto. The second Expert moto start was nearly a carbon copy of th e first. Stutts thrott led out of sight as Powers, Ritchie , Olguin , and Daniels played ca tc h -u p . The ca tch- u p crew began swapping pos it ions and Ma ico rider M. Barry Ritchie ca me around in second, trailed close ly by Mike Meeks on a 250cc Honda . Daniels , Powers , R iebschleage r and Neil Cooper followed . Ritchie kept the gas on and finished second, but not without pressure on the closing laps from 250cc rider Dave Daniel. After a respectable start , Russel Powers began to fad e midway through the race and fin ished eighth for the combined classes and fourth in the 250cc. Powers is just back to racing after a one-month layoff from a crash that destroyed his CR 250 . He blamed lack of conditioning in his "skin ny little arms" for fading in the second moto, but fortunatel y, due to m a ny DNFs in the 250cc class , Powers picked up a first overall with 2-4 finishes .
