Riebschleager took overall 125cc honors with a 1·1 day, followed by Davis , 2·2 , and John Bersch , 3-4 . The first moto start of the Open Intermediates had Donny Cox roosting Breidenback, Bowden and Moliere with his Husky. Moliere took th ree laps to pass everyone , but from there on ou t , he d id all the roosting all the wa y to the fin ish . Moliere steadily built h is lead by about two seconds per lap and left Cox and Bowden fighting for the b ridesmaid pos ition. Cox lost some eight seconds on the leaders during the third lap , but made it up in four laps when he passed Bowden and held on for second . Bowden took third , Breidenback fourth and Clay Bain fifth. Moliere picked up the lead as he directed the holeshot in the second moto. Cox , Bowden, Breidenback and Bain were warring for second. Bowden shadowed Cox for four laps and passed him on the fifth , bu t Bowden could have used a "fifth" as he came out of a back section at a snail's pace after hitting himself on the gas tank . Bowden allowed only Cox to pass before he pulled himself together to continue the battle. With three laps to go Bowden had fallen too far behind to regain his position and the second moto finished , Moliere, Cox , Bowden, Breidenback and Bain. . Cherry and Balcom soggy Capitol City MXwinners By John Rann ikko, J r. AUSTIN , TX , NOV. 10 John Cherry spashed and slid around a wet , muddy Capitol City Night MX track to win the 125cc Novice class while Joe Balcom, of San Antonio , earned first pl ac e honors in the Intermed iate class during the second round of th e a n nual Frostbite series. Three and a half inc hes of ra in 'd u ring the previous week had soaked the track to the point that som e sections had to be bypassed and the whole track was shortened ; the starting straightaway was a third the length of the original . Puddles still standing on the track left many sections with only one line to make pass ing difficult. The greasy sweepers and slimy mudholes surely tested every rider's abilities. Paul Beach throttled into an early 125cc Novice lead off the sta rt with only J ohn Cherry's Yamaha giving pressure. Cherry was within striking distance on the third lap when he took a poor wet line into a sweeper , trying to pass Beach, and his front wheel washed out in the mire as he gracefully fell face down in the mud . Five riders passed while Cherry was down but , starting from seventh , Cherry once again went to work on Beach. Meanwhile , Johnny Middleton . ridi ng a 100cc Suzuki , worked his wa y to second place and held it until th e clos ing laps when his motor went sour, dropping h im to fift h at the fin ish . Scott Scovas ja rod e conservat ivel y throughout the enti re rnoto and finished third whil e Cherry powered through the greasy track to close on the leader . At the c hec ke rs Paul Beach's Yamaha held only three seconds on John Cherry. Another steady rider , Ron Cooper, worked from ninth on the start to a fourth at the finish . Cherry didn't eat anyone's muddy roosts during the second moto as he led it from start to finish . First moto winner Paul Beach , once again near the front , challenged Cherry several times but track condit ions limited passing areas wh ich prevented Beach from overtaking the leader. Johnny Middleton held th ird for the early laps of t he secon d m ot o bu t the sa me engi ne problems that p lagued him in the first m oto ca me back to haunt him duri ng the second. Mid d let on 's 100cc Suzuki co uld only crawl and he faded far back into the pack . Ron C oo p e r and Scott Scovasj a co m bi ned fo r an interesti ng d ice throughout the entire second moto. Sco vasj a led most of the ra ce but Cooper saw a cha nce to pass Scovasj a and two lapped riders by tak ing a n unorthodox line thro ug h a big puddle . It worked . Cooper plunged in and sprayed them wit h a wak e of co ld , muddy water a t th e sa me time . Cherry held o n for th e m ot o win a nd took th e 125cc Novice overa ll with 2· 1 finish es. Bea ch finis he d second overall with Ron Cooper third . T he Experts and Int errned iat es wer e com bi ne d but since on ly one Expert showed up , a nd he d idn't ride the second m oto , it was essentia lly an Intermediate m oto . Mike Fa rmer , the Expert , won th e first moto , but as far as th e Intermed iates were concerned. Kevin . Fo wler took the holeshot as Ellis , Jeff Wassom and Joe Balcom followed . Honda m ounted Mark Newman was last. Fowler went down in a corner and got right ba ck in , but it gave Balcom time to pass for the lead . Meanwh ile , Newman had worked into a challenging position and passed a cou p le of riders , only to fall down . relegated last place once agai n . Persistence and hard driving paid off as Newman pulled to second place at the fin ish behind J oe Ba lcom . Kevin Fowler fin ished third and J eff Wassom fourth . The second Intermed ia te moto start ed just before m idnight and onl y three bikes entere d . Balcom took the holeshot as Fo wle r and N ewman brought up the rear. During the first lap Newman and Fowler took over the lead , but they crashed together before · completing the lap , giving Balcom the lead he nev er relinquished. After the first lap the rnoto was a real yawner as they finished Balcom , Newman and Fowler: The overall order was the same. Rio Bravo hosts GNC qualifier at least one seco nd per lap over the op po sition . D avid McClain proved that he is for real in moto one of the 125cc Expert class by out -ra cing Glen Johnson . McClain , on the Razor ba ck Bore Special . was th e fastest thing on th e track in moto one and st art ed m oto two by working up from a bad start to catch leaders Dan Co nway (A .J. Foyt Suzuki) and Kyle Landrum (T C R Suzuki). He appeared a su re winner until he faded with two la ps to go and settled for sec ond overall . Co nway, who managed to slip p ast Landrum while holding back McClain in th e final rnoto . ended up the overall winner after Glen J ohnson re ti red with a shattered rear wh eel. Da rr en Eames from Mesquite ( Lucky's Cycle -Suzuki ) showed the local bo ys the quickest line around Rio Bravo's high speed circuit , even beating the resident fast guy Gen e H egerneyer . The two swapped the lead five times in the final moto trying to decide just who was the fastest. Eames, who at times seemed completely out of control trying ' to hold back Hegemeyer , remained in charge and held on to win . Moto winners Robert Conran and Jim Vaughn. both on Suzukis, did not win the Open Intermediate contest because the two were unable to pu t together consistent motos, They left the overall win to Tom Morrison (Yam ah a ). Greg Seitsrna's relaxed sty le and super fast Can-Am MX-4 again combined forces to dominate th e 250cc Juniors for the fourth weekend in a row wh ile the rest of the class wondered , " who is that guy?" Locals Steve DeBlasio and Glen Mathews won th e 125cc Novice A and B groups but out -of-towner Jim Stoker seemed right at home winning Group C . Each rider had to fight off 30 competitors for his individual victory . John Pollard couldn't get it together in the first moto of the 100cc class but came back in the final moto to win the overall as first moto winner Mark Rob inso n crashed in the final race. Minibike class win ners Da rren Howton (Stock Mini class) and Tim J ustic (Senior Minibike) had to pull it out in their final motos to defeat tough competition. Junior minicycle ace Warren Daily had to battle for his first moto even though he won ; but in the final he ran off from his challengers suggesting that he might be the next in a long line of Texas minibike superstars. Bo Daugherty and Eddie Vreeland played chase in the 50cc class fo r the overall victory with Bo sweeping both motes. Texas State champ Angie Scott inj u red a wrist in the first moto and was unable to pose a threat to eithr ri der. • By Mike Reilly Resu lts Results MINI J R FINAL: 1. Tony Haage ISuz); 2.
