Box 2297D Pasadena, Cal ifornia 91105 Danny Burtt continued his125cc Pro win streek et Carone. ~pecchio speeds atCoronaMX By Ron lawson CORO NA, CA , NOV. 3 A fine turnout of unattached sportsmen as well as high school r acers prompted a night of exciting berm-bust ing at Corona Raceway. Most notable of the sportsmen was Joe Specchio (Suz). who put in a hot ride for first overall in the 250cc Novice class . ; At the start of the first mo ta , it was Robert Robertson (Suz) in command over Joe Feld (Hon) and Specchio. As the race continued, however. Specchio worked his way to the front. Robertson p ushed Specchio for two laps but e~entu ally started to fall back. As the end of the mota approached, Tom Singleton (Han) charged up from t lie rear to make a last minute challenge for second. His effort. however, was just not enough and he crossed the finish line a few _ yards behind Robertson . In the next ro und . Robertson once again was th e one to show the way through the first tum. This time he . held on to the lead for most of the race desp ite the best efforts of Speechio. It was the best dice of the night. Specchio would pu ll alongside Robertson in the straights, and sometimes even pull ah ead. bu t then Robertson would reco ver the lead in the nex t tum . Rob ertson's undoing came near th e end of the ra ce when he expected to cross the fin ish line and discovered that he still had one lap to go . His concentra tion was thrown so far off that he allowed both Specchio and . Singleton to pass him on the last lap. Specchio took a hard earned first overall ahead of Singleton, Robertson , Feld and Dan Frear (Hon). Since 'early last spring Danny Burtt (Suz) has ma intained an unbelievable winning streak in the l 25cc Pro class. The only person to interrupt that streak was fellow Redlands Suzuki rider Marty -Miller way back in July. Well , Miller is up to his hip in plaster now and no one can hold a candle to Burtt at Corona. This week it was Robert Gray (Yam) who tried. Burtt took the lead from Richard Simmons _ (Kaw) in the first tum while Gray was back in fifth place . By the second lap , Gray had pu t himself in third place behi nd J im DeGa ine (Suz). He pushed DeGaine for severa l laps. and then finally the first moto fin ishing order was Burtt, Gray, T ed Hoyt (Suz) . Simmons and DeGa ine . Burtt was once aga in ou t in front of the second moto. This time, however . Gray was right with him in second. One serious mistake on an y lap would ha ve cost Burtt th e ' race and Gra y waited pa tiently. For six laps th ey circled the track, bu t that mistake never came. Burtt took the overall with Gray and Hoyt following. Norco High School took the HSMX with an im pressive 160 points. Their win was made certain by taking first place in five different classes. Mike Word, Allen Lucas. Allan Coats. Scott Seeley and Craig Seeley all did their part to put Norco on top of Esperanza, Moreno Valley , and Fontana. But the high school rider that stole the show in the 250cc Senior class was Don Griewe of Moreno Valley . H e came out equipped with a '79 Yamaha 250 and ra~ a~ay. J im Minteer (Esp ) and Rick Saltsbury (Esp) followed . • I ~- --- - ------ ---- ------ -- -------~ less sound = more ground 1...----- 1 Results MINI BEG: 1. Dorin Myeno C Suzl; 2. Mik. Boxondolo 3.
