By Bob Alloy
of the season . The ARRA road race at
Riverside next month has been
cancelled after a schedule conflict with
a go-kart championship race.
AMA Pro Mike Baeder (Yam)
moved from th ird into the lead after
one lap in 250cc GP . But Keith Code
(Yam) came from even further back to
challenge Mike for th~ lead. Keith
went by Mike on the fifth lap , but
Baeder (1 :40 laps) retook the lead
going down the back straight on the
next lap. With seven of 10 laps
completed Mike was leading Code by
one second, with Barry Elliot seven
seconds back. Code made his move ,
and was sining on Baeder's back
fender as they began the last lap. But
Keith was still there in second as they
took the checkered flag.
Code (Vetter Kaw) led the Open GP
pack down he back straight on the
first lap, but Billy Addington (Kaw)
took the leadja.rhe sweeper before the
front straight. Bruce Hammer (Yam ,
1;55) went into the lead on the back
straight the next time around, and
proceeded to pull away to a 15,second
lead over Addington and Code. In
fourth and fifth places Barry Elliott
(Yam) and Frank Simmons (Yam)
were dicing for the 500cc class lead.
Simmons went around Elliott with two
laps to go and held on to win by a bike length. Addington's six points for
second and Terry Nelson's three points
for fourth brought them into a final
three-way tie for the Open GP champ'
ionship with Chuck Parme at 24 points
apiece..
Wendell Phillips (Mr . Jags 750 Nor )
blew off the opposition in 550-750Open Production. By the end of the
race he had a 20-second lead over Lee
Fleming (Due), the Open class winner.
After the race Wendell's sponsor Steve
Peterman voluntarily tore down the
750cc engine for a displacement check
to convince skeptics. Meanwhile,
Malcolm Hill and Ed Toomey were
staying clser than Siamese twins in
550cc Production: Toomey led going
down the back straight on the last lap ,
but Malcolm passed him in the
sweeper and held on for the win.
