Lewis masters Old Timers MX and Wendell Phillips were double winners at 1978's finalAmerican Road Racing Association race By Bob Alloy of the season . The ARRA road race at Riverside next month has been cancelled after a schedule conflict with a go-kart championship race. AMA Pro Mike Baeder (Yam) moved from th ird into the lead after one lap in 250cc GP . But Keith Code (Yam) came from even further back to challenge Mike for th~ lead. Keith went by Mike on the fifth lap , but Baeder (1 :40 laps) retook the lead going down the back straight on the next lap. With seven of 10 laps completed Mike was leading Code by one second, with Barry Elliot seven seconds back. Code made his move , and was sining on Baeder's back fender as they began the last lap. But Keith was still there in second as they took the checkered flag. Code (Vetter Kaw) led the Open GP pack down he back straight on the first lap, but Billy Addington (Kaw) took the leadja.rhe sweeper before the front straight. Bruce Hammer (Yam , 1;55) went into the lead on the back straight the next time around, and proceeded to pull away to a 15,second lead over Addington and Code. In fourth and fifth places Barry Elliott (Yam) and Frank Simmons (Yam) were dicing for the 500cc class lead. Simmons went around Elliott with two laps to go and held on to win by a bike length. Addington's six points for second and Terry Nelson's three points for fourth brought them into a final three-way tie for the Open GP champ' ionship with Chuck Parme at 24 points apiece.. Wendell Phillips (Mr . Jags 750 Nor ) blew off the opposition in 550-750Open Production. By the end of the race he had a 20-second lead over Lee Fleming (Due), the Open class winner. After the race Wendell's sponsor Steve Peterman voluntarily tore down the 750cc engine for a displacement check to convince skeptics. Meanwhile, Malcolm Hill and Ed Toomey were staying clser than Siamese twins in 550cc Production: Toomey led going down the back straight on the last lap , but Malcolm passed him in the sweeper and held on for the win. TRABUCO CANYON, CA, NOV . 5 Thirty-eight Old Timers showed up at Racing World for a real nice overcast day. In the Master class , Blackie .Lewis took the' holeshot in moto one and held it all the way to the checkered flag. Blacki e was followed by "Moving Marv " Olsen . The second moto saw Blackie repeat the first mote with Olsen on his tail. Olsen had to pull off because of bike troubles and second place went to Marshall Jennings. In the Senior Expert class Chuck Woody was first to the checkered flag , followed by Ken Williams. The second moto was almost a repeat of the first with Ken and Chuck exchanging places as in a checker game. After the dust had cleared, it was Williams and then Woody. The Expens were shown how by Ray Sanchez who took the holeshot in motes one and two and held it all the way to the checkered flag . Following Ray was Bill Bird for second in the first moto and Bob Berdyck was second in the second moto. Tbe Amateurs really mixed it up with Bill Lyons taking the first , moto followed by Bob Crandall. In the second moro, Crandall took the checkered flag followed by George Meyer. For the Novice division it was John (Lurdo) Turdo taking the holeshor for three whole laps in the first moto but Paul Mayhew ended up with first place , taking second was Wayne ' Powell and com ing in third was Bob Klan. In the second moto Powell took d~ holeshot all by himself. A resta rt was necessary so that the rest of the Novices could participate. Lee Fleming, Steve Shcrader Keith Code (Kaw , 1:54) finally had things his won way in the "4-stroke GP". Addington was a distant second, with some form of mechanical trouble. Wendell Phillips took his second win of the day in the 750 class aboard a Suzuki borrowed from Tom Hayner. Meanwhile Yoshima-Honda teammates Steve Schrader and Ben Bernie were battling for the 500cc division chamionship, Steve carried in a 54-51 lead , Jeff Ward topPed a tough 250cc Pro class at SSM. and made sure of th e tide with a norrow win over Ben . The 410cc Production battle found Thad Wolff (Spec. II Yam ) and Ed Toomey (Yam) battling not only for the race lead, but also the class points championship. Thad came in with a 42-40 lead. Toomey shadowed Wolff for four laps , then took the lead (1:42 lap) at the start of the fifth lap. Wolff retook the lead at the top of the hill , and stretched it out when Toomey went off into the dirt doin~ 100 mph at Willow's infamous tum nine. Toomey got back in Thad's draft two laps later, but lost ground again when Thad got a better line going around some lapped riders. Wolff went on to take the win and the championship.
