When John Stoffel reached the waterfall dropoff, he was leading the Beginner/ Trail Novice race. Number 823 was second overall, first Beginner and Alan Dryden was first C bike Beginner, third overall. . As the race 'p ro g ressed , Tom Dickerson edged past Art Short and Mike Jones was following Art. Cutting right into " Ca nyon Country," John G oatcher , Gary Brick , David Hazelman and Duane Summers made their way into check three . Kirk Alexander made his way into the high rollers followed by Carl Massingale and Harold Andrews . First girl Sandy Love was ahead of Steve Padilla , Don Love, Rolf Sutton and Deanna ITenkins. , Sean McCurnin, Gene Peters and Ron Dunchan picked up the pace running in the 30s as they had a great time in the foothill rollers . Rod Wheeler was just about to get check four when Mark Gibson got by. Tim Saueressiq headed ,u p the windy 'c a nyon followi ng Gordon Oblander's dust . John Cline started up the long uphill ahead of Frank Chamberlin, George Jaggard , Ryan Grosz, a nd Mike Walters . Nancy Calelli and J~anette Lange were somewhere in the pack, representing the ladies' effort. [i. H ead ing down the ridges to the valley floor , Wayne Langner broke trail at the bottom as did Bruce Lipe !~d Blair Swallow. Steve Zollinger ~9.u ld see the pits but he had his m ind on the rain ruts in the m iddle of the trail. Derrick Paiment pitted 15th overall . Ed Wisenant was 'next then j(ejth Tullar had his tank topped off , and headed out for loop two . 1 The second loop had Doug Mitchell making up six positions to 13th, Joe Turnbaugh lost two to Steve Zollinger and Roy Harris. By check two . Blair Swallow dialed his Maico on and took a~ay, nine spots, settling in at eighth . Number 827 was next , then Craig Baker maintaining fifth throughout t,!Ie race . At check three, Jeff Moeller was still at fourth but second and third h~.d swapped. Larry Spa eth got by Steve Brookshire for second but nobody was close to th e fast -Flying Woolmore; Heading ou t of the ~ou nta i ns, Dave held the Husky in th e fast mode all the way to the finish . , Despite the cold weather , th e racers a.ll had a grea t time . Some of th e markers and Webco arrows look ed like Lays potato chips but nob ody got lost . Rumor has it the Maywood Toys for Tots GP may cancel due to low entry. I can't believe desert racers would let down a bunch of ;.needy kids .
