an

performance . but still finished second
to Husky wizard Goat Breker. The
Kawasaki duo of Robert Reisinger and
jim Cooke finished th ird and fourth .
The 125cc Pro class held th e best
battle . Mark Lawrence (Yam )
grabbed the holeshot and started to
run awa y. But on the second lap. his
bike sputtered to a halt , ending his
hopes for a win. Danny Burtt (Suz)
then took over with Gary Scheidler
(Yam) close behind. They ba ttled for
about 20 m inutes before Sche idler
broke away and went on to take th e
checkered flag . Burtt finished second
with Steve Wiseman (Suz) th ird and
first time Pro Mark Gu iebier (Suz)
fourth.
Breker was definitely hot . He wasn 't
content just to walk awa y with th e
250cc Pro race so he teamed up with
j im Cooke and destroyed the pumpkin
team race. The re ason it was called a
"p um pkin" race was because ea ch
rider had to have a pumpkin or a piece
of a pumpkin clearly visible every time
he passed the scorers. The riders
would have to stop in a "pu mpkin
patch" on the first lap to obtain a
su itable specimen, and then pass it on
to his partner every lap afterwards.
Before the ra ce started. most of th e
riders had ingenious set-ups for
carrying th e ' pumpkins. such as a
transparent bag a ttached to th e
handlebars . But the rough track took
its toll on these and many of th e
participants wound up with their pri ze
taped to th eir helmets or a piece of it
oozing throu gh the ir fingers . Breke r
a nd Cooke, however . did n't have a ny
problems and th ey ra n away wit h th e
race afte r letting the Da nny j ean/
Dan ny Burtt tea m lead for a lap .
Offi cial results still pending.
Gibboney takes
DeAnzaMX
Intermediates

SUNNYMEAD . CA . OCT. 29
It's no secret that some of the
best racing at any event can be
found in the Sportsman classes
and the race at DeAnza Cycle
Park illustrated that point well.
The 125cc Intermediate class roared
off the line and filed int o th e first turn
with Craig Lee:(Su z) ho lding a narrow
lead over Bart H itt (Suz) and Mike
Antes (Kaw). Gregg Gibboney (Suz)
• was way back in seventh pla ce as th ey
came around for the first lap . but he
was wasting no tim e in work ing his way
up . By the tim e the moto reached the
ha lfwa y po int, it had come down to
two fierce battles. Lee: was still holding
off Hitt but Antes and Gibboney wer e
coming up from behind fast. Hitt
dropped out of the rac e on the next
lap and Gibboney, in a burst of speed,
passed both Antes and Lee for the
lead. Gibboney went on to win the
moto with Lee in second and Ad rian
Hernandez (Suz), who rides for TDC
seat reupholstering, took th ird.
In the next round . it was once again
Lee: who took the holeshor, but this
time he was displaced on the th ird la p
by Mark Gale (Suz). Gibboney was in
third place and he began pushing Lee
right away. They diced for ab out five
laps before Gibb o n ey fo u nd an
ope ning and slip ped by. Gale went on
to win the moto, but the overall went
to Gib boney ahead of Lee . Ga le was
third .
T he 125cc Expe rt class held a big
upset . Craig Gormley (Yam) is always
on top of that class when his bike
doesn't break (which is all too often),
but this time he ran int o an obstacle by
the name of Crai g Dal e (Suz). Gormley
got the mota one holeshot, but was
na iled on the seco nd la p by Dale.
Gormley wasn 't d iscouraged . however .
and he hounded the Suzuki rider for
five laps and then moved back into the
lead . When the checkered flag came
out, Gormley was still in th e lead . but
the second moto is th e im po rt a nt one.
and both riders knew it. Once again .
Gormley was first to th e firs t tum , and
once again Dale got by on the second
lap. This time, however . Gormley was
unable to retake the posi tion a nd he
went across the line in second for
second overall ahead of Dan Cheney
(Suz).
The' 125cc Beginner race saw John
Demmitt (Ya m) take a convincing two
moto win over Ray Erickson (Yam )
and Trace DeLion.
