north of town is Sunrise Valley Cycle
Park. 'Now no one would think that
out here on the big dez there would be
anything but sagebrush, joshua tree
and jack rabbits. But there it is. big as
life - a real motocross track. The
desert is flat but th e track is not. There
are lots of jumps and hills , turns and a
couple of straightaways. The track
also comes with built in whoop-de doos .

Saturday was motocross school day.
1 understand it was a good class with
lots of riding tips , but when I became
the proud owne r of a new alternator,
regulator, battery, etc. , r was only
eight hours late for class.
On Sunday there were three motos
so everyone had lots of racing and a
chance to make up for mistakes made
in one moto .
Movin' Marvin Olsen got lost in the
first Masters' moto, Ron Miller didn't
even slow down to look . He led gate·
to-wire . However, Olsen came back in
the next two motos for .the overall win .
In the Senior Expert class Ken
Williams and Chuck Woody battled it
out with the lead changing like a
woman's mind. Ken hung in to win the
moto, but Chuck was the day's winner.
New Expert Ray Sanchez did it to
the Experts. He got the ' lioleshot ,
crashed, did a front wheel landing and
won. Manny Dauber's bike seized, but
till then he was moving! Bill Bird flew
in for a second place. Sanchez held on
to win overall, ahead of ' you rs truly
and Bird. .
Tom Vetter and John Said went at it
in the Amateur class. John held on for
five laps, but Tom got by and took the
lead and the win on his way to the
overall. Said didn't figure in the final
results and the runner-up positions
went to Len Sciacco and George
Meyer.
In the Novice class, Gene
Uebelhardt showed up to dominate
the first moto. Dan Kawashina, Dan
Harris and Wayne Powell were nip
and tuck all around the track. As the
checkered flag waved, it was
Kawashina, Harris and Powell in that
order for second through fourth ,
Harris kept going through the next
two motos to take the overall win.

rains finally came they were able to
complete the racing program.
Pete Hames has got to have one oj
the fastest 250cc Yamahas around and
has picked up a good sponsor in Bill's
Pipes. The first head to head duel
came in the Money short track where
Ross Klatt, a rider on his way up, got
the jump on Hames off the line. Chris
Cannon was third and Bobby
Garabedian , sporting his new Pro
number , fourth . It didn't take Hames
long to find his groove as he came low
out of four and slipped under Klatt to
take over the lead by the second lap.
Garabedian did the same thing to
Cannon and moved to third. Klatt
gave Hames a run for his money but
was unable to catch him and had to
settle for second. Garabedian held off
Ca nnon to take third.
')'I"he 250cc Money half mile was
almost an insta n t replay of the short
track only this time Hames took the
leadlfrom the start with Klatt second,
Garabedian third and Cannon fourth .
Aithou gh there was no place changing
the racing was very close with good
defensive riding on the part of
everyone.
nW ayne Rainey led the troops on a
merry chase in the Open Money half
mile and the guys were hard put just to
keep him in sight. Don Waffle, still
gftting used to his new 750cc , came off
the ' line second but Danny Perkins
slipped under him and locked in
behind Rainey for the duration .
Waffle held Scott Shoup at bay to pick
up third.
Dave Peters continued his domination of the Open Amateur/Expen
class but it was not without its
moments. Off the line for the heat
race there was a chain reaction crash
in~the first turn that took three riders
out. Luckily everyone was able to
return to the line just a little worse for
wear and Peters went on to claim the
win. In the main Peters was dialed in
and got a super drive off the stan.
Riding buddy Steve Eldredge locked in
behind him and Don Waffle claimed
the third. Waffle found a hole and got
. by Eldredge but time ran out before he
could get a bead on Peters and he
settled for the second.
Double wins were scored by Randy
Howard in the 250cc Novice and
Jimmy Rosa in the 125cc class. Jimmy
Snow came about as close as you can in
the Mini division but went down on
the last lap of the short track which
left the door wide open for Roger
Thompson riding a Yamaha made up
of every spare pan he had. Snow did
win the half mile going away.
